Possibly silly question...

I know this will be answered in my pre-op class on Tuesday but I want to ask it here as well.

When I'm buying my vitamins for immediately after surgery (I think I start 8 days out)...do I look for all chewable/liquid or are there some tiny ones you can actually take? I've been searching all the pharmacy's for chewable and liquid forms of everything and keep coming up short...so aside from a mass order at amazon I dont know where to go for vitamins or what form to get :(

I got all my vitamins at the Vitamin Shoppe.  When I went in there a few weeks ago, I told the sales girl I was having gastric bypass and I needed the following vitamins in a chewable form.  She took me around the store and showed me what they had in chewables and liquid's.   I know we are able to swallow some small ones pills, I don't remember the exact size though.  Maybe someone else on here might remember from the classes.  Hope this helps :)

I would recommend, for the beginning, chewable or sublingual.  I found Bariatric Advantage the most palatable, (multi and calcium) but there are cheaper brands out there.  I know people who used chewable Flintstones and some that still do.  As for B-12 you must use sublingual (melts under your tongue) as you will not absorb it any other way. I would buy that at Trader Joes.  It's fairly inexpensive there.

But as you state, I'm sure your doctor's office will give their advice for what they want you to take.

I would recommend chewables and readily available ones.  Between Costco and WalMart, I have always been able to get everything I need at good prices and my labs since day 1 have been spot on perfect.  That being said, I would hold off until you meet with your surgeon and get their recommendations because each program's protocol is SOOOO different.  Each person and their surgeon can be SOOOO different!

We're so excited for your big day, can't wait to keep watching and sharing your journey with you.

Hugs,
Barb

Bariatric Advantage for iron and calcium...you can get them at the pharmacy that is in the same building as Dr. Coirin's Office.  It's very expensive there.  After a few months look elsewhere for cheaper stuff and better deals.  B-12 probably you can get a Walmart pretty cheap.

For my multi vitamin I started off with flinstone chewables.  Now I take Centrum and they are quite large but so is one of my medications.  I do not cut them and have had no problem swallowing them at all.  My surgeon told me that there would be no reason for me to cut them so I never have.

Aside from the vitamins, you may want to buy some Biotin.  I take 5000 mg / day.  I don't know if it has helped or not, but my hair is finally growing back and I hope it get's somewhat thicker.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

Get your sublingual B-12 at Trader Joes.

Early out I took two Centrum Chewables each day. The Bariatric Advantage chewable iron is very good.

If you look on the Bariatric Advantage website, they have a lot of good stuff including some calcium you mix with liquids. (You can find similar stuff elsewhere.)

Vitalady.com is very good as well. But I'm not sure how much of her stuff is chewable.

Early out this more expensive stuff is worth it. After you can swallow pills again, you can go back to some cheaper stuff you get at the store. (Although I still like my BA chewable iron!)

Best of luck!!
