Waking up in pain......

I am not a whimp but I felt like one when I came out of surgery Tuesday!!!! I was not at all prepared for how much pain I would be in and continue to be in through the second and third day. I do have to say that my pain is lessening but I still can't stand upright. When I was in the recovery room I would stop breathing when they gave me pain releiver. So..... No pain meds for almost 4 hours!!!! I was crying and dryheaving it hurt so bad. The best thing that happened to me was Tylenol with Codeine. I stopped using the pump with Delotid in it and only took the Tylenol. I guess pain releivers are different for each person and thankfully I found the one that worked for me otherwise I would't have made it!!! Seriously though, If you are going in, go in with your eyes wide open. Be prepared to be tough it will help.

I'm sorry you had such pain and I don't mean to sound like I'm dismissing what you felt, but you are really doing a disservice to those who have not had surgery yet to say that they will feel the pain you felt.  Not everyone deals with pain in the same way.

When I had my RNY surgery, there was some pain, but nothing really all that bad and I had no nausea at all.  Everyone is different.  When I had my hysterectomy last year, the pain was worse then my RNY although pain meds helped.  Pain meds, however, caused me to be naseous so I stopped taking them 2 days after my surgery and was fine without them.

So again, I'm sorry you experienced so much pain, but as I said, what your experience was is not to say everyone will have that same experience.  Surgery, any surgery will cause some pain.  Pain tolerance is different in everyone and pain meds help.

Congratulations on getting through your surgery successfully and good luck on the rest of your journey.

The only reason I posted was to hopefully help prepare people for what they might feel. I realize everybody is different with regards to pain and I truly hope nobody has to feel the way I did when I came out of surgery. I don't understand how I can be doing a dis-service to anyone by helping them prepare for what might happen. I am happy that the experience wasn't that bad for you.

I'm sorry you had such a problem getting your pain meds in line.  I know I can't do morphine;  it makes me wake up vomiting.

But to offset your title:  not everyone has such pain on waking.  Mine was pretty minor, like I'd done a few too many situps.

Take care of yourself;  take your Lortab as needed, and nap as needed, too.  Watch out for the Horrible Hormone attacks, and be aware that the anesthesia will take a while to clear out of your system.

Good luck!

I didn't have much pain with my gastric bypass. I remember being so freaked out by all the what ifs that I went back to the hospital at 6 days post op because I thought I had a blood cot----because
I was so freaked by all the stories. Since surgery, I have had a hysterectomy, tummy tuck, arm lift and excision of all the skin off my back and sides AND for sure my gastric bypass was the easiest surgery ever.

My biggest thing was dealing with head hunger and the loss of food.

Hope you feel better.

I'm glad your procedure went well for you. I've actually had many people e-mail me on both sides of the topic. I've had 7 pregnancies with two of them ending in miscariage so I'm not a light weight when it comes to pain. This was so different than anything I had ever experienced and then not being able to be given pain meds for 4 hours right after. The stuff they gave me finally made me violently ill. Good greif it was almost unbearable. I'm doing really great right now though. All soreness is gone and I'm up and around. Congrats on your new body. I hope it's everything you wanted it to be:)
