Hi everyone,
Today Tuesday is my second day on my liquid diet.  Wanted to check in and also wondering if anyone has any advice on how to get through the next two weeks. My surgery is on July 20th.
Cheers, Amy

The only way to get through it is to tell yourself you have a prize waiting at the end.  It's not going to be easy.  I'm not going to tell you it is going to be easy.  You will get cranky and irritable.  But just remember why you are doing this.  You want the surgery?  You'll do the liquid diet that your surgeon requires.  Some surgeons don't require it.  Mine didn't.  But yours does, so you have to do it.  There is nothing else to be said.  You have to do it.  I recommend a large supply of SF ice pops.  Keep sucking on those as much as you can.  And again, remember what is waiting for you at the end. July 20th is your surgery day.  It's what you've been waiting for.

Ditto on what Stephanie said and try and STAY BUSY so you're not constantly thinking about food.

good luck to ya!

Amy,

First of all, congratulations on your upcoming surgery date!

I had to do a week of liquids (a combination of slim fast shakes and clear lquids).  What I did was to drink a full 8 oz of water before each shake I drank.  It really helped with the feeling of fullness.  Yes I was taking multiple trips to the potty but it worked.  The next thing I did was drank the liquid that I strained out of Progresso soups that I liked.  This helped with the flavor of things, as I don't do well on plain broth.  I even drained hot and sour soup from a chinese restaurant because I needed flavor.  Frozen SF popsicles were a help too.  Those things combined with as others have said, keep your eye on the prize really helped me to go through those 10 days.

You can do this.  Come and vent anytime and we'll be here with all the support and friendship you need to make it to the losers bench!

Hugs,
Barb

I echo what everyone else said... the hardest thing for me was giving up soda and caffeine but I did that 1.5 months before surgery since I had another surgery for kidney stones then..  it was hell with headaches and nausea, etc from withdrawal.. I was a serious caffeine addict.  but the 2 weeks before surgery I was able to have protein shakes so I tried out different flavors and blended up some fruit in them.. (something you can't do right after surgery but it was good)  and  tried diff soups and I Love the crystal light fruit punch/orange popsicles.., I don't like the other flavors though.   It wasn't as hard as you think.. and the main reason for it was to shrink my liver for surgery.. it's a much easier surgery with a smaller liver if your liver was as enlarged as mine.  So I was ready and willing and able and the time went by fast and you will have lost weight too!  Before you know it.. your surgery will be here and then the fun begins!!!

Best Wishes!! You Can Do IT!!!!!!!!!  Whoo hoo!!

My surgeon recommended 5-7 days, i did seven.  I had full liquids for four days, then took the dreaded laxative, then clear liquids for three days.  To be honest, it was easy after the third day, though I felt quite weak on the fourth day.
