dental problems 5 years post op. anyone else?
im about 5 years post op and i had never had a cavity until about 2 years ago. i was pregnant at the time and having some tooth pain so i went in to the dentist. he took one look at the x-rays and asked if i was a drug addict! ugh... for the record, ive never done anything like that - that crap scares me. anyways, it turned out that i needed 3 root canals and about a dz fillings. as i started working on all of that, one tooth cracked in half. ive been working on all of the dental stuff for about 2 years and i cant seem to ever catch up. every time i go, theres more damage. ive taken my vitamins like a good girl, i brush etc etc....
has anyone else had problems with their teeth since the surgery? ps: im only 33 and not looking fwd to dentures! at this point i had 2 molars removed, need to have 2 more removed + 3 more root canals and various fillings....

I had asked my surgeon at my consult about this very thing because ive read things about people losing teeth, or the teeth getting very thinned out. He said that alot of people go through that because their body isnt getting enough of something, when was the last time you had your levels checked? Maybe talk to your surgeon, and your dentist to see if you should use a floride rinse and maybe a special tooth paste. Hope everything works out for you :)

I'm glad you asked this question because I was begining to think about my teeth just the other day. I'm 1 year post op and have noticed my teeth are a lot more sensitive. I use to drink milk like a new born child, around the clock. Now i'm some-what lactose intolerant and I drink very little milk because it gives me the runs. I try to take my calcium religiously but I seem to forget my second dosing a lot more often than I like. So i'm sure my teeth are probably sensitive because my decreased consumption of milk.
Good advice above! I am one month shy of 6 years post op! This is definitely a problem of mine as well. This is definitely one of the unfortunate side effects of this surgery! Check the type of Calcium that you are using. Is it calcium citrate or calcium carbonate? Very big difference between the two and may be a reason you are not absorbing. I do not absorb calcium well ever since childhood. My teeth have taken a big hit since my rny and now have implants. My jaw bone has also deteriorated and have had bone implanted as well.
Add me to this list as well. I'm just over a month away from my 6 year mark and I've already had 2 root canals...one of which broke before it could be crowned, I have demineralization to all of my teeth to the point where the enamel is rotting away...but since it's demineralization and not decay...there's no pain. I admit that I've not been the best at taking my calcium citrate...the pills are still hard to swallow...but I do eat a LOT of cheese/yogurt.
I'm waiting til my break in nursing school to get a bridge/crown combo thingie over my front top 4 teeth. Part of my issues though stem from 3 sets of braces, a fall off my bike in jr. high that would have knocked out my front 4 upper teeth had it not been for my braces, 2 pregnancies (both post op), and now add on to all that my RNY...
Anyway my dentist now has me on 2 prescription tooth pastes. One is a high flouride and the other is high flouride with added calcium triphosphate to absorb the calcium directely into my teeth. I've only been using it a month but I'm already starting to notice a difference.
Good luck...and you're definitely NOT alone in the tooth wars...
