5 day pouch test and one year anniversary

Hi everyone,

So....I am just past 12 months out, and I have lost 75 pounds. YAY for me! I am so glad I had RNY surgery!

However, I wanted to lose 100 this first year so I am a little disappointed in myself. I am healthier than I have been for a long time, and I feel great most of the time (when my blood sugar is being 'normal'.  I work out a lot, wear non-plus-sized clothes and have been able to stop taking all my meds. BUT I am still 40 some pounds away from my goal and the scale has not moved in months. YIKES!

I have been having trouble with reactive hypoglycemia (late dumping) and generally low blood sugar...mornings are really difficult for me. I am trying to follow the doc's advice by eating more often and eating only foods low on the glycemic index . I am afraid this is really slowing down the weight loss. I am scared to pieces of the hypoglycemia, and scared to pieces that I won't lose any more weight. So either I eat or I have hypoglycemia; if I eat, I don't lose weight. I can't seem to win right now. I am hoping the doc will send me for some sessions with a nutritionist to help me out. when I see him on July 1.

My biggest fear is that I will fail at this, my last and ultimate shot at losing the weight....I have failed at all other attempts. I am pretty sure a lot of us feel this way sometimes and I watch on the board for other people that are like me. My losses and NSVs have been small and slow all along. :)

Today I started the 5 day pouch test to see if I can 'relearn' how to use my pouch and jumpstart me to weight loss.. It may be difficult to manage the hypoglycemia on this 5 day test but maybe not...I want to see if the 5 day test helps me. Have you tried it or anyone you know? What do you think of it?

Thanks for reading, Cindy

Congratulations on losing 75 lbs. You have not failed 75 lbs is a lot to lose! How many calories are you eating each day. If you don't eat enough you will not lose either. I also read an article that this guy changed his meals around. Like he ate dinner food at breakfast and breakfast food at dinner and such. You might as try it. Good Luck and Congratulations again.

Thanks for the kind words, Elizabeth.
I know I am probably eating too many calories, mainly because I am trying to avoid a session of hypoglycemia. Anyway, I posted this same post on the main forum as well and I did not get positive feedback on the 5 day pouch test so I am rethinking that whole plan. Maybe I needed to 'shock' my system just a little so that I can return to good eating habits. Maybe I needed to admit to myself and to all of you on this board that things are not going as well as I hoped. I hope this is a turning point for me and I start to lose weight again!
Thanks for replying!

Hi Cindy, I think I remember looking at the 5 day pouch test at about the same time. I had about a 6 week stall, it was devastating (the stall).  I decided not to do it because it just didn't look healthy.  I have found for me that journaling is SO helpful.  I like fitday because it breaks it all down into percentages. It really helps me get back to the basics of wls. As for the Hypoglycemia, I'm right there with you!! At about 2 years out I had  started to gain, because I was eating to keep up with the hypo. Well it turned out it was WHAT I was eating that was creating the vicious cycle. For the average person high carb intake make them hungry a couple hours later, for you and me it makes it necessary to eat.  If you do fitday you may find that you're eating more than you thought, and watch for the hidden carbs like MaltoDextrin (my personal nemisis).

My Very Dear Friend Yvonne McCarthy put this together, it is 40 ways they hide sugars in what we eat:
