Nightmare date/food disaster!
My husband and I went on a date today.
I knew we were going to the movies and dinner so I tried to drink a double protein shake to deal with any head hunger and physical hunger while at the movies. I assumed I could eat a salmon salad or something along those lines when we went to dinner.
Fail.
Hubby sees me drinking shake and says "you DO know we're going to eat right?" I nodded and put the rest of the shake back in the fridge...
huge mistake...shoulda just drank it when he wasn't looking.
So we get to the movies and I get a medium popcorn, small soda (shoulda snuck in some water and the rest of my protein shake) and I get the "screw its"
I share the popcorn with him (who is now an evil warlord for chastising me for drinking the shake) and I don't get butter. (does it matter at this point? grrrr)
He doesn't get it.
So then after the movies we go to BJ's Restaurant and brewhouse - the menu is littered with extremely high caloried crap..but in the back is a nutrition information!!
So I ordered the all you can eat soup and salad.
Cheese brocoli soup and cesar salad... 1 bowl of soup (couldn't find the nutrition info on either interestingly enough but there's a ton of stuff on their menu and on their nutritional information)
I really feel like I blew it but it's also a good lesson for me. I should have eaten beforehand or finished my protein shake. Taken in snacks instead of eaten popcorn and soda (two huge things that Dr. Suh regards as bad bad bad for weight loss people)
I'm only a week in for my medically supervised weight loss program... I saw the doc last week and he said 3 meals a day, around 300 cals each and no snacks. Drink lots of water etc etc.
I did okay til I went out, then I lost control.
How do you guys navigate movies and restaurants?

Don't beat yourself up about this. What would you have had before? I'm guessing lots more popcorn WITH butter, and a big meal afterwards. You probably would not have even looked at the nutritional information. Maybe I am just projecting. That is what I would have done before surgery.
We don't have to be prefect. Next time you will finish your shake. Explain your plan to your husband so he can support you. You may not have made the best possible decision in the circuimstances, but I would hardly call what you describe as loosing control.
Congratulations on doing as well as you did. And don't let this imperfections ruin a lovely date with your husband.

I am trying to not beat myself up... and I'm glad that it happened NOW - before surgery, rather than LATER, after surgery.
I felt trapped in the restaurant and we went there because we had a gift card and my husband likes the beer.
Gift card for that restaurant is gone now we have one for Applebees but I can order a salad with chicken but today was just a bad test run...
it really opened my eyes to how "automated" I am (hubby too) about food when we go out
I really wanted a large popcorn, all to myself, smothered with butter...and a few boxes of candies. Soda...eh, just to wash everything down with.
And you're right, I would have ordered the richest thing on the menu and not given an aliens butt about the fat or calories...
So yeah, going to eat before movies and sneak in cheese and water and ... "plan" as best as I can when it comes to eating out I guess...
It's almost a relief because my husband really doesn't like to get out much so I don't have to worry about it for awhile... I'll use that to my advantage.

It's easier post-op because we aren't hungry much, at least at first. The automatic eating won't be cured, but it's easier to not give in to temptation if your brain isn't also telling you "YOU'RE STARVING".

You know you eyes are opening up to this now and that is good too. I know before my surgery I would have had a large pop corn with butter and the largest icee they sold. I probably would have had dessert at BJ's too, they are so yummy! Drinking the water will help you feel full too. You will get there. Now is the time to learn all that you can and I think you are! Hang in there and be kind to yourself!

"peer pressure" was en force. absolve youself of last night and be forwarned of future situations. your husband needs to know he can't "pressure" you into eating situations that arent good for you.
i almost never eat out because it is so hard to know what youre going to get no matter what you order.
you shouldnt have to sneak or hide your shakes etc (this is an issue of mine) you will need to make your plan and stick with it-full stop.
discussing what is going to be REAL for you, with your husband, is very important. my husband is not supportive and does alot of counterproductive food buying that i need to work around, so i speak from experience,.
good luck and enjoy the ride!

I am only 3 weeks post op, but even pre-op we always go to dinner first, or eat dinner at home and then go to the movies, that way you can just skip the snacks all together because you are already full. You can toss a string cheese, a protein bar, a baggie of carrot slices, a bananna, or another healthy snack in your purse along with a bottle of water or crystal light or other diet beverage. We went to the movies last weekend, we went to Taco Bell first, I had 1/2 of a pintos and cheese and stayed satisfied throughout the movie. Your husband sounds like hes affraid of loosing his eating buddy, after surgery I told my husband "Sorry I am no longer your eating buddy, but now I sure am a cheap date! Tell him to stop being a brat, let him get all the butter he wants on his darn popcorn and let you have your protein shake or healthy snack. Sounds like you are doing awesome with that weight loss, keep up the good work!
