 Hi Everyone,

My son is graduation on 5/26 from CSULB and I don't have a clue what to get him.  We are not having a party, just a nice expensive family lunch/dinner of his choice.

He would like a Mac book, I think because I just bought myself one, but he has no need for a new laptop.  He has an HP and needs to be repaired.  I have offered.

The way I see it, I have paid for his education in cash and therefore he is graduating after 7 yrs of college (but hey, he's graduating, something I can't say I accomplished).  He is getting his degree with no student loans to pay back and no debt.  Personally I think this is gift enough.

On the other hand, I am feeling guilty like a bad mom by not getting him a gift.  I just have absolutely no clue what to give him.  He could probably use cash, but I think a gift says much more.

Any insight you could offer I would appreciate it.

Ok I would have LOVED to have graduated with NO debt so for me personally and respecting the VALUE of $$$ that would have been enough for me and of course lunch/dinner with the family as well.

Since you have offered and his HP needs to be repaired why not that?

Katt - I have thought of a watch and that thought is still with me just for the sake of having a gift on graduation day.

Ms Shell - We think a lot alike.  Unlike most 25 year olds, my son pays nada, zero, zip.  We have covered everything from food, insurance, car repairs, cell phone, money when he is broke and even his education.  This was our agreement as long as he was in school.  He has maintained a job as a waiter part time but now real life comes a calling.  Now he needs to save money to move out.

Thanks ladies for your replies and I am sure I will figure something out.

See you both next weekend.

How about a new suit for job hunting? Does he own a suit? He is so lucky that you paid for his education. You are good parents.

Elizabeth -

WOW, you hit the nail on the head.  I am taking him out tomorrow to Nordie's to see if we find a nice suit, shirt, tie & shoes.  There are some very nice looking dressy style cheap watches at Kohls for like $25.00.

Thank you so much.  I asked him and he said that would be perfect.

Thank you for the compliment on good parents.  We try to do the right thing.   Now he just needs a job to save up, and move out.  I am hoping by December he could accomplish this task.  Not that I want him to leave, it's just time.  I will miss him very much when he leaves as we are very close.  Now it's time for my duaghter and I to reach that level as well.

Today he had a great 2 hr. lesson in the grocery store with me.  Now on to cooking.

Anywho, thanks again for that great idea of a suit.  It is just absolutley perfect.

Hope you have a great weekend.

That is what we did for our son. They need to look nice for job interviews. When he moved out it was hard but I like you said it was time. He moved out to go to Sacramento State. He went 2 years to our community college. He was ready. My older son lives in town and we get to see him all the time. But I have to tell you it is nice being "empty nester's". My youngest lives in Roseville now. I would like to see him more, but that is where his life is. We talk on  the phone a lot though.

I hope your son gets the job of his dreams! You have a great weekend too!

Hi Annette,

I think the suit is a great idea. My mom gave me money for clothes, a gift certificate so I could buy them myself, but I think it would be better to go with him to get the suit to make sure it isn't spent just on casual clothes. I don't think I was smart in how I used the gift certificate.

Congratulations on your son graduating. 7 years isn't so strange anymore. It takes longer for so many reasons these days.

Congrats!
