Need help with Insurance

I've been trying to get some health coverage for myself for the past six months. It's been such a frustrating headache. I've been turned down it seems like at every corner.  Aetna, Blue Sheild and Blue Cross have all said no.

I can't apply for Medi-Cal, or the one above it because of the " excessive assets " left to me by my mother who died in August in the form of inhertence. We're a one income household at the moment so it's not like we're swimming in cash.

And insult to injury, I had an emergency appendectomy a month ago. The bill? Over 27 grand. That really hurts because I had hoped to use it as seed money for a down payment on a home.

I was told by Aetna that they're not accepting any new applicants who've had the gastric bypass for five years. The woman over the phone told me to look on the bright side, seeing how I only had a little over three to go. I wanted to reach through the phone and choke her.

And now since the latest health bill has been passed, I'm even more lost and confused. So I'm really hoping that someone here might have suggestions on a company to look into,  a number to call. Something.

Argh! I'm so frustrated with all of this, I don't know if I'm even making sense. I just want coverage so I can get some care that isn't going to cost me my daughter college fund.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Your employer doesn't have a health care plan?

You said you're a one income family.  Does your husband's work offer health insurance?  A group plan cannot turn you down.

I left a lot out, I'm sorry. I'm so upset over all of this I'm not thinking clearly.

We're not married. What little insurance he does have will get him into the door but that's all. It's bare bones at best and he has to cover the rest of the cost. It's through Pacfic Care, I believe.

My daughter's Cobra coverage, through her dad, also expires in June. So I'm looking for something I can also add her to. Luckily, she's as healthy as a horse * knocks on wood*

Thank you for your patience with this.

So dad doesn't have to keep coverage on the daugther? That sux. Most of the time they are responsible until age 18 or 25 if student. Not knowing how old the daughter is I can only guess.

If you and bf or co-habiting you can be put on his insurance in most cases. Even bare bones is better than nothing.

She's six years old. And her Dad keeps her on his Cobra coverage since he lost his job a year ago. It expires in June. It covers her medically.

I'll ask about the bare coverage. Thank you!

The new health plan in regard to pre-existing conditions is supposed to kick in immediately. Obama is signing the bill this morning. I would try applying again. Unfortunately the bill doesn't address cost, but there is supposed to be relief for people who can't afford a plan with a high premium. I would apply again, see what offers you get and call your Congressmember's office on how to access the money that's supposed to be set aside for people to buy insurance who can't afford it.

Good luck. I've been were you've been and it's not fun. I had an accident while putting my bike on a car rack, a bungi cable snapped back on almost took my eye out. I was literally 3 days from my health insurance at my new job to kick in. That accident cost me around $6,000, including a 5 mile ambulance ride that cost almost $1000.

I am hoping the best for you!
