Weird Question...

Hi Everyone, I am new to the CA board although have been a lurker for some time. I am getting ready to have my surgery in a little over 2 weeks at the Freemont Kaiser. I am getting so excited and a bit nervous. I was planning on having a pedicure to help me relax (as well as not have Samauri swords on my feet), but was wondering if I can have my nails painted. I noticed on the boards that some surgeons don't allow this. Does anyone with experience at Freemont Kaiser know about this? Thanks, Janine

Good morning and welcome to the board and congrats on your upcoming procedure....you are not asking a wierd question..its a terrific question.  I know as a former nurse, we insisted that no nail polish be used, as nail beds, both fingers and toes, are visual check points on how well your circulation is while under anesthesia and in recovery.  Its a good idea to check with your surgeon's office now, as nail polish can stain the nail beds and we want pure natural color on those fingers and tootsies!!  After your first check up...then get those mani-pedis again !!
Best wishes!!

You are going to have to check with your surgeon.  I had Kaiser So Cal and had polish (actually didn't ask and wasn't told).  On the off chance you could still get your pedi and just get clear...or maybe french tips

Hi Janine, congrats on your upcoming surgery!! I had a fill and pedicure done with color right before my surgery, but check with your surgeon to be sure. Each doc is different. Good luck hun. x0x0x0

I had my surgery done at the Kaiser in Richmond - however, here is my two cents! I discovered it had NOTHING nothing to do with what my surgeon said or wanted. It came down to the nurse's who prepped me for surgery. I have fake nails that are painted and my surgeon told me that I would have to take one nail off of each hand and make sure they were not painted. Well lets face it I didn't want to do that! So on my surgery day I left them on and the paint and took everything with me that I would need to remove the paint or the nails. Turns out I didn't have to do any of it. The first nurse who started to prep me said something and then another nurse came over and took over and told me not to worry. Sometimes the paint/nails can interfer with the way the oxygen sensors read so she just tried it to see and it was fine. I will tell you that I had on a light light color and she told me dark colors of nail polish or super glossy will interfer more. Just my little insight!

Take care and the best of luck on this journey!

Welcome to the Cali board....My wife Anna, had her toes done and there was no issue.  If there is in your case, I'm 100% sure the hospital will have something to remove the nail poish....Call your surgereon's office.

I was Kaiser Richmond and my sister was Kaiser Fremont we were both told NO polish and if we did not follow directions we could have our surgery canceled. It was  not worth the risk to either one of us. I would say get your mani and pedi and just ask them to buff your nails to a high shine. Thats what I did  it looks like clear but with no polish just incase a random person is grumpy that day you don't want to risk it.  Good Luck on your special day!! You can go back a few days post op for a polish change and add color then, a bit of treat when you feel up to it.

Please forgive me ahead of time LOL I'm posting this from my phone. One thing you might want to take into consideration is that you will Have your incisions.... Acrylic nails ..no matter how clean of a person You are - they carry disease and lots of bacteria under them! Babies in the neonatal units have actually died due to nurses having acrylics On. They're pretty but I would wait until after your incisions heal up a bit :(
