My mom's cancer & a trip to Hawaii

Hi all,

As some of you know my mom has been fighting cancer for the past few years. She had major surgery in October to remove a tumor that was successful, but her latest blood test shows there still may be cancer left where it originally appeared. SIGH! She's tested again in a month to see if this number goes up or possibly down. It means starting next month she might be doing chemo again or she may decide not to continue fighting the cancer. She's asking what the point is if she's always feeling crappy from chemo or sugery.

This get me to my point. She's thinking a trip to Hawaii, specifically Wakiki, is in order in February. I can't use online booking because of a few variations, but I wondering if any of you have used a reputable travel agent and even better if you used them for a trip to Hawaii.  My mom wants to fly first class while three of us would fly coach, my mom and my cousin would stay together in a handicapped room and my husband and I in another. My mom needs a balcony with an ocean view.

Any advice or ideas on a good travel agent or a website that would allow me so many options would be great. We'd go February 18-25.

Hi Ms. Blues,

So sorry to hear about your mom's ordeal.  Sometimes life just isn't fair.

As for travel to Hawaii.  I don't, personally know of a travel agent, however all of the online sites offer phone numbers for you to call to speak with a travel agent who can help you with all the details.

Just visit the various sites and find possible trips that you would be interested in and then call the numbers listed on the sites for further help.

Hope you plan a great trip.  I've never been to Hawaii but hope to go someday.

I too am sorry to hear about your  Mother's cancer.  I don't blame her for wanting to take a special trip with her family.  I am sure you could find a good travel agent in Santa Cruz.  Find a company that has been around for a while.  Look in the yellow pages.  Good Luck and be sure and keep us posted.

I am so sorry to hear about you mother.  Cancer is such a terrible disease and I know my grandfather felt the same way...He got to the point why, but you hang in there and you are in my thoughts and Prayers.

As for a travel agent...have you tried AAA, they have a great travel agent and they are very very helpful!!!

Good luck!!!

Hugs....

 MsBlues,

I am so sorry that your mom is faced with this decision again. I will keep her, as well as you and your whole family in my thoughts and prayers. I hope that the blood tests number does down next month. I know this is a difficult situation, and unwanted at that, for you and the family. Your mom and you are both such strong women.

I second little Michele's choice. I would definitely look into AAA. We have used them a few times when booking vacations and I have never had any bad experiences with them. The agent that you pick will book everything and you can pay there at the office. Very reputable. If you aren't a member, it might just be worth the member fee. They usually have specials on becoming a member, check online at AAA.com. Hawaii is beautiful, I have never been, but my parents used to go visit a family friend who lived there. Good luck with your quest.

Hang in there. Huge hugs to you!

So sorry to hear about your mom...my prayers and thoughts go out to you.  I think the trip is a fabulous idea!  Another approach to finding what you need: if you know what hotel/resort you want to stay at, give them a call directly.  Ask for specials or multiple day discounts and let them know what your specific needs/requirements are...at this time with the economy as it is, believe me, ANY hotel will work with you.  Tourism is way down in the islands (I was there in June and our hotel, the Maui Prince, was practically empty!) and the businesses are hurting.

Big hugs to you, Lady...and both you and your mom..hang in there!  I know it's not easy.

Thanks all for the kind words. Cancer is an emotional roller coaster. My mom is tough and according to the doctors she shouldn't still be with us. She keeps surprising them and I think she still may have more surprises up her sleeve.

I don't know why, and I am even a member of AAA and they also provide my home and car insurance, I didn't think of them for their travel. I'll have to check that out. My hubby also went to a travel agent today in downtown Santa Cruz that's been around for as long as I can remember. I am going to do comparison shopping though.

Thanks again! I really want my mom to have a wonderful trip.
