Do we still have to do the 6mo. classes? Some people say that the protocol has changed. Can anyone give me the 411 on this. I live in Lake Elsinore and the surgeon I'm getting is Dr.Suh. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Laura,

I had Kaiser, but I did not have to go through the Options classes.
Find out who is the bariatric coordinator for your facility and ask him/her.

Hi Laura, I had surgery in April and I had to do the 6 months of Options Classes. Let me tell you, it was soooo worth it. I was so much more prepared for this surgery than those who didn't take the classes. And I made some wonderful friends and got a lot of support. Good luck! =)

I have Kaiser in So Cal, got my VSG in November 2007 and I had to take the 6 months of classes.  I believe in Nor Cal it is different depending...I'm directionally challenged so I have no idea if your So Cal or No Cal either way good luck!

I am a Kaiser patient and a patient of Dr. Suh.  The classes are not only mandatory, but OHHHH SOOOOOO worth it...you will look forward to it each week and it will blow you away what you will learn.  It doesn't all focus on just the surgical aspect..it covers physiology, psychology, nutrition, personal and public issues and a realm of information that EVERYONE in the health and non-health field should learn, especially about what is happening INSIDE our bodies as we fight with our weight.  Besides that..you will have a class with atleast 30-40 other folks who ALL are going thru the same issues you are..you will never feel alone again.  Best wishes with your journey..there are a host of people here to help you thru it...much care and prayer...

I was supposed to start the classes in September, but since I already have the band they referred me to the Kaiser bariatric surgeon in Harbor City. I met with him and he scheduled my surgery, no classes needed. Probably because this is a revision and I kind of know what to expect to some extent. Definitly take the classes though. The things you will learn will make your journey so much more easier.

Good Luck!

Yeah ... I'm doing mine tomorrow at Fremont Kaiser and I didn't have to take a class, just the orientation and at least one support group in the year leading up to surgery.

I was approved long ago but couldn't do the 10% weight loss. Is that still required at Fremont? Thanks for any update you can give me. Gail
