The liver is the first place that loses fat when you lose weight.  So usually the Doc will put you on a strict diet before surgery to try to reduce the size of the liver.  They have to move the liver out of the way when they do an RNY so the smaller - the better.

The thing is how long do you think they put you on a diet. I wonder if they make you loose alot of weight. I am trying to have my surgery before this year is over my insurance will be changing. And i have no idea if my new one covers the surgery.

Each surgeon is different on what they require.. Some want you to cut back a few weeks before surgery and others want you to be on a strict diet for a month.  Best bet is to star****ching what you are eating right now with the goal of having surgery by the end of '09..

I had fatty liver before I even considered surgery.  I went online and did a lot of research.  I drank a lot of water,  cut out booze, and fried foods, took milk thistle pills and did some walking.  It won't stop you from getting surgery,  but most surgeon's will want you to shrink it before surgery, for safety reasons.  They dont' want to nick your liver....

Good luck,

Oh another thing, take LOTS AND LOTS of fiber....  that will help.  Start now, it can't hurt.

I have or had, don't know now, a fatty liver, plus I have some liver disease.  My liver measured 22 cm when they did my surgery and it was a little more diffucult because of the size.  It is just difficult because they move the liver to do the bypass.  But it can be done, and it certainly does help.  I haven't seen my liver specialist since I have lost my weight, but I know when I saw him 1 month after surgery, he was so happy I had WLS.

Good luck, Diane

For me I had fatty liver problems a few years before I had the RN&Y. My liver numbers were 3x what they were suppost to be and even had to have a biopsy OUCH! I have yet to see my liver specialist since my surgery 3 months ago but will see him next month. When I talked to my specialist he was all for the surgery. I dont think it will go against you for approval.
