Weight Lose Study of the Week 1

Thought I would do something different . I am going to post  medical studies that I come across and pass them on.

DENVER (CBS4) ― A new study in the journal Nature may help explain why losing weight is hard and keeping it off is even harder. It all boils down to the level of the fat cell.

The study says once a person grows a fat cell, they can never get rid of it. The best one can do is to try to keep from growing new ones and keep the ones they have like empty, deflated balloons.

Everyone is born with a certain number of fat cells. Gain weight, and the cells fill up and the body then makes more cells to hold the extra fat. But when someone slims down the cells shrink, but never disappear. Empty fat cells manufacture chemicals that make them hungry to fill back up with fat. That's what makes the weight come back.

Children and adolescents are especially prone to making new fat cells, but people can make more at any age. In fact, the average overweight adult has double the number of fat cells than a person of average weight. Even if a person has a gastric bypass or stomach stapling surgery, they'll lose weight, but never lose the fat cells.

Dr. Dave Hnida said though researchers aren't sure about liposuction, it doesn't look like that is a permanent fat cell cure either.

"The only hope you have is what you've heard a million times before," Hnida said. "Keep those balloon-like fat cells deflated with diet and exercise. That way the fat cells you have will be small and flat, and you won't continue to make new ones."

During childhood is the time when a person can set themselves up for a lifetime of weight problems, but the fat cell can be beaten, Hnida said.
