Hi Everyone------ I need some input---- my wls is scheduled for November 5th----after all the hoops that we all go thru---it's coming right up!  SO NOW---- I go to the eye doc---and ( this is actually good news) I need to have CATARACT SurgeRY!!!  ( I am only 54---but this is diabetic eye stuff)  I am relieved--because I have been having problems with my eyes for a while---so glad it is fixable.  ONLY----can I have the  eye surgery this close to my WLS surgery??? Before? AFTER???   If I have it this year---- I have met my insurance out of pocket---so that is why I want to rush into it if possible....... and yes, I do have a call into my surgeon's office----but he is out of the country until next week.....
Any comments, advice and opionions????? Thank you for your help!

I have no idea on this one.  If you don't want to wait til your doctor comes back, try calling the hospital you're scheduled to have surgery in.  I'd start with admitting and let them guide you to the person you need to talk to if they can't help.

Good luck.

I had major eye surgery last yr (ONSF was the name of the surgery )and at the time I wanted wls, my doc told me he wanted me to wait at least 2 to 3 months before I had wls. If it were me I would have wls then eye surgery but only if the eye surgery can wait 2 months.

Thank you---- yes, the eye surgery can wait---I just hope to get it all done this year----because I have met my out of pocket with insurance ( so---$$ is done!) So, I just scheduled  both  eye surgeries for 2 weeks after WLS---- and the second is one month after that---- ( I can cancel the first if I need to...) Just wanted to get on the books....so hopefully when my wls surgeon gets home it will all be okay.
You wrote "at least 2 months before"....I am hoping that 2 weeks to 1 month after surgery will workout..... it will save me so much $$ !!!
"Always something"...........but we hopefully manage to work it out......

I have been told by a friend who is 3+ years out that vision can change after WLS.  I am only 2 months out, but I think my vision is changing a bit.  I'm not sure what that implies for the timing of cataract surgery, but you should definitely discuss it with both surgeons.

thank you----in your case---changing how?? For the better??? I know that my cataracts are a diabetes thing---and even tho' after wls the diabetes will go away---the cataracts won't!
The eye surgeon doesn't seem to think there is a problem....so I'll find out on Monday what the wls surgeon says!  I am anxious tho' to hear about how your eyes changed, ( if that's all right with you?)
Thank you......Lori

My friend said it improved hers, and I think it may be improving mine.  It's too soon to say, but I've noticed that sometimes I can see better without the glasses I got shortly before surgery.

Call Dr. Higa's office and have them ask Dr. Boone I am sure he is handleing Higa's patients for him while he is gone. By the way as we eat better and and lose some comobs we get better vision. I went from full time Bifocals close to tri focals to single vision lenses just for reading and less than a month ago had my vision check and it was even better than before  that.

I really don't think it will be a problem having thisgs do close. You aren't put under for cataract surgery and the recovery time is very quick.

GOOD LUCK ON BOTH!!
