Question for RNY People
I was talking to a girl at work who had a bypass... (hers was over 10 years ago) When I started talking to her about being afraid of stretching out my pouch with water she told me the issue wasn't stretching out the pouch. It was streching out the opening from the pouch to the intesting as that would create just one long piece of intestine and would not allow for weight loss. Which is what she says happened to her. Does this sound right to anyone else? Not sure what to think. Any help to clear this up would be appreciatied.
Shella, from what I understand you don't stretch out the pouch especially with water and I doubt if that is really the case. I hope I am not sounding harsh but at 10 years out you can't expect your pouch to still be the size of a golf ball.
I do know that drinking right after eating will make your pouch pretty much useless.

how big is the pouch at 10 years? I know I'm only 8 years and I can't eat very much...I still dump and do all the other stuff I did early on....
What can I expect to happen in the next couple years??

Hi Shella, you can stretch out the pouch and the stoma. Drinking while eating pushes the food through faster, which is why we're told to wait 30 minutes before and after eating, to have something to drink. At 10 years out, your pouch will not be the size it was right after surgery, but if you follow your surgeon's protocol, it shouldn't stretch very much. Hopefully some of the members who are more that 4-5 years out will have some more feedback for you. Darlene is 8 years out, so that's close to 10... Hope this help a bit. =)

She is correct about stretching the stoma not the pouch. Since our stomach works like a funnel you want to keep the stoma small so that you stay full longer. I don't think water stretches it though, but eating too much can. The extra pressure of solid against the stoma can stretch it and therefore food empties out quicker thus getting hungry sooner and eating more. Hope that helps.
