How come nobody told me that I was gonna break out in a 'rash" with the Strep Throat Yeah, I'm laughing now, but it itches.  I just did a little more research on Strep and one of the symptoms is a rash.  Guess where it is...all over my face.  I'm trying not to scratch. Goin back to doctor today anyway, for the insomnia issue.  I wonder could I be having an allergic reaction to the penicillin??  Geesh!  I'm a walking mess right now.  Yep Janine, this must be the adult version of this illness.I hear Strep Throat is goin around yall.  Keep washing those hands

I know that when I was 12, and took Penicillin I broke out in a rash, and that was a side effect.  Have you ever taken Penicillin before?

WoW Annabelle is that you?lookin great!  Okay back to me  My face is now swollen, I'm itching and my lips look a little fuller than usual.   i just got off the phone with the advice nurse (and did a little Googling) and yeppers I'm having an allergic reaction to the penicillin.  I could have sworn that I have taken penicillin before, maybe not.  I remember when my sister was giving birth to my neice they gave her penicillin in her IV. Within minutes she broke out in hives and she was itching and just miserable until they flushed it out.  The nurse told me not to take anymore and take some Benadryl. I will be seeing my doc at 2:30p today.

Just in case no one has ever taken Penicillin -FYI:

Common allergic reactions to penicillin include rashes, hives, itchy eyes, and swollen lips, tongue, or face.

In rare cases, an allergy to penicillin can cause an anaphylactic reaction, which can be deadly. This type of reaction usually develops within an hour after you take penicillin. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, hives, wheezing, dizziness, loss of consciousness, rapid or weak pulse, skin turning blue, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. If you think you are having an anaphylactic reaction, call911immediately.

Thank you for the complement.  Benadryl makes me sooo sleepy, so my doctor told me to take Zertec, and it worked and doesn't make you sleepy.  Now, this might help you sleep.....LOL

I used to have a reaction to penicillin, and still do to sulfa drugs.  My reaction doesn't start until about a week after I start taking it - then I break out in hives.  I don't know why it takes so long, but I've learned to watch for the first hives!  When you go to the doctor, he might give you some antihistamine - I just kept the extras, and at the first sight started the antihistamines immediately.

Good luck.  I know it's miserable.  -- Carol

I also had an allergic reaction to antibiotics...Sulfa...It's good that you are going to the doctor becuase allergic reactions to medication is nothing to mess around with...it could spread VERY quickly.  I had a nasty rash all over my body...it freaked me out...The doctor gave me a shot in my butt ..LOL!  Wishing you a quick recovery...TamiN

That's why the old fashioned name for strep is scarlet fever because it causes the body to flush red with a rash.  During pioneer times it was a death sentence for many because the bacterial infection would grow and go to your heart.  We really should thank God that antibiotics/penicilin was discovered.  It has saved many lives and now for most people strep is only a nuisance and not fatal.
