Coffee
I know we're not supposed to drink coffee post-op.
Is that because its a diuretic?
I read all the time that people are drinking coffee etc, is this rule mainly for the early outs who may not get all their water in the beginning or just a personal choice?
I've weaned myself to one cup a day and honestly love my coffee, lol
Yes, one reason is it is a diuretic and also the therory is that it can cause, or contribute to developing, ulcers. Especially in that little, itty-bitty pouch. Decafe should be fine if that would satisfy your taste buds. But, as always, just follow your surgeons protocol, especially your first year.
After that you can make up your own mind I guess. I drink full leaded coffee every day myself.

I went the first six months after surgery without coffee.
THe reason why, is that coffee constricts the capillaries and makes it so blood flow can hinder the healing process.
Once that six months was gone, though, I jumped off the edge. Now I drink several cups of coffee a day with no problems.
My wife is like you, though, she only has one or two cups a day.
So far int he two years one month from surgery, I've lost 400 lbs, and my wife has lost 86 since she had her surgery in January.

Ok.. I definatley didn't drink coffee the first year after surgery. I think it was 2 years before I actually started drinking coffee. But, I love it and can't live without it.
I was told by my surgeon all the stuff everyone listed above, and also because coffee will add to dehydration and especially the first year it's hard to get all your water down.
It's definatley something to discuss with your surgeon!
But.. I am a coffee fiend!
Good Luck!!!

I didn't even bother weaning myself from it lol! I just stopped the morning before surgery and haven't had a cup since.... I miss it a little but I get SO FULL so quick that I would rather drink water or some food in my mouth instead of a cup of coffee. I also was told it was bad for our pouch b/c of ulcers.

I was last wednesday at a local support meeting and bariatricadvantage was speaking there and the gal mentioned to not drink coffee within two hours of taking any vitamins as it causes you to absorb only 50% of the vitamins. She stated it doesn't matter if it is decafe or regular it is just coffee in general that does it.
