Hi Denise,

I really cannot add anything to what has already been said.  A lot of great advice.

Other nice accessories: a watch with at least 2 different interval settings, running socks (to prevent blisters) and a good running bra.  All you will find at a running store.  To find a running store in your area, go to yahoo and type in "running stores in whatever city you live in".   
The people who work in running stores are actual runners.  Plus, you will get a lot a free, cool info on other races and training programs.

I forgot to mention - ice your shin splints everyday (20 min. on/20 min. off  X 3).  This will bring down some of the internal swelling and will promote healing.
