Chewable Calcium
Hi sweetie! Viactiv is Calcium Carbonate which we are not suppose to take as we don't absorb it well. We should be taking Calcium Citrate. Please check with your surgeon or nut on this as it is very important!!!
Unfortunately most of the chewy bites are the C.Carbonate. There use to be Citracal Creamy Bites that were C. Citrate, but they don't make them any more that I know of. It was a nice treat, but it is too important to mess with! Just MHO!!!! I take horse pills now, hate it, but do it!!! bigg huggs, Becky

Just a little PS this morning...
Just heard back from my Nut and as I suspected, the line through the carbonate meant NO CARBONATE, but it was a lot of information in one sitting so I didn't remember that!
So she stated that if the viactive is carbonate, then DONT USE IT.
I'll have to go either the liquid or chewable route then.
Thanks everyone!!!
See, my Nut isn't a Nut, I AM!!!

Lauren,
How many milligrams are you supposed to take. Bariatric Advantage has some good tasting Calcium Citrate in flavors like wild cherry.cinnamon, chocolate, and mint. They also have calcium citrate crystals. You can put them in your water bottle. The unflavored is good and you can put it in crystal light.
I beleive the viactive is a calcium carbonated and we do not absorb carbonate as we need stomach acids to help with the absorption of it. That is why those of us who have had RNY need Ca citrate.
Another Ca that I like is twin labs chewable calcium.

You are definitely on the right track by taking Calcium Citrate. Calcium Carbonate does not absorb easily, especially with GB because of the lack of an acidic environment in the gut. Also, Carbonate collects in the kidneys and can cause kidney stones. Keep in mind that when you take carbonate, blood levels can look fine because the body leaches calcium from your bones. I like Twin Labs Calcium Citrate chewables, but they are very large (you can find them at vitamin shops). Bariatric Advantage also sells a chewable and you can find their ads on this website.
Good luck!
Good luck!
I don't mind if the calcium tablets are large - I just want them to taste good so I won't shudder at the thought of chewing them up and then end up skipping them altogether. Must be a psychological thing for me - I get that shudder once when I don't like the taste of something, and that's that. I won't eat it anymore. It is not easy to find calcium citrate, and even harder to find it in chewable form! Thanks for the info and the suggestions ...

I am not big on chewables period. I really don't like the way they feel on my teeth. Have you considered a liquid calcium. I take Calcium Citrate made by LifeTime and it comes in several different flavors. I have tried the Pina Colada and it is a tablespoon twice a day. You can mix it with anything you want, but I just put it on a tablespoon and swallow it. I am finished with the bottle of Pina Colada and will be trying blueberry next. I found it at Vitamin World.

I hadn't thought about liquid calcium, actually ... I think on my days off this weekend, I'm going to take everyone's suggestions and go shopping. It's hard to know what you'll find in any given store, so I don't want to count on being able to find one particular thing. And I like having options. :-) Thanks for the suggestion!
