Doc says no protein shakes or drinks???
I called my surgeons office today to speak with the rn and find out a little more info regarding pre-op and post-op instructions as the packet of info I have is not enough (at least I dont think so). Anyway she told me that they dont want me to use any kind of protein drinks or powders to get my protein in, they want me to get it in the food I eat. Now with reading all the posts here and trying to get as much info I can I find it impossible for that to work. I've even figured out what protein I want to use and thought I was being a "Good little patient" by seeking out stuff I will need ahead of time. Im sure there's someone out there with a doc that says the same thing but I just dont know if I agree. Someone please agree with me or explain.
its important to learn to eat regular food.. making good positive protein rich choices will help you to be more successful.. take it one day at a time & track your foodl.. you will see that you CAN DO IT>. protein supplements are just that.. SUPPLEMENTS>. they will provide you nutrition in the begining as your tummy is healing but then.. in the REAL world.. you have to make food choices.. hence.. the training yourself to eat protein..
Good LUCK.. its a challenge but soooo worth it..

My doctor has me on liquids the first 2-3 weeks, then soft foods with liquid protein supplement, if needed, for 2-3 weeks.
Then moving on to regular food with liquid protein only as a supplement if you can't get the food to stay down for some reason.
After that They really frown on liquid protein. Getting used to real food, how it plays emotional roles and how to combat these issues are paramount at this stage so you don't slide back into old patterns of eating.
That said, every doctor has his own success plan. I'd ask them to explain why they chose this method and explain it doesn't make sense with what you've been reading. How many surgeries like yours has he done? I picked my doctor because he's done many many of the RNYs and has a death rate of 0. His successess are numerous. Maybe ask to speak with other patients?
Good luck on your journey.

In reading your post you either have Higa or Boone. That is their protocol, they feel you must be able to get all of your protein from your food. Do I agree not a first but the farther out you go yes you can get it you just have to learn what and how much. I have many of Boone and Higa patients in my support group and I would say a good 80 percent will suplement at first. But it is one thing that you have to choose for yourself. The rate of sucess for using the tool long term from that office is great.

You didn't mention your Dr. Is it Higa?? ( From your "Cen CAL" I am guessing) I have dr. HIga as well--and that is what I hear----- I know that for myself---just to be sure---I'll get some of the protein powders-- to supplement.... ANyway---- It seems that every dr. has their own protocal--and we do best when we listen to them. I am pre-surgery/waiting for insurance... I have paid close attention--when someone else on this board has Dr. Higa---I have checked thier profile and pm'd or posted specific questions. Maybe you can find your dr. on this website--and find other patients; and get their ideas...
Best of luck to you....and keep us posted----I know I'll always need to learn how to get enough protein!
Take care,
Lori
