Surgery Prep

Ok, so before I go under the knife (Aug 12th)  I know I need to get some protein. Ive decided on the low carb isopure and that cytomax ready to drink stuff. Do I need to buy vitamins or will my doc let me know what to get. I have only seen him once for my initial consult and will see him again for pre-op. I must say its been a quite impersonal experience with not alot of info. Anyway, I will ask questions at pre-op. Also I never really thought about stuff to bring to the hospital (DUH), so what am I supposed to bring. Never went into the hospital for elective procedure before so I am totally clueless.

deb! hey there... I'd be worried, too, if I hadn't gotten info from my doc by now!!

i would call them tomorrow, and ask them all your questions!! There are some basics, but also each surgeon has their own protocol... best to start with finding out theirs!

To take to the hospital.... chapstick! That was the only thing I really needed... i mostly slept afterward, and then got out of there ASAP...

best wishes!!

Thanks Lori, I got a little bit of paperwork regarding the pre-op liquid diet and what to expect with the surgery but nothing in great detail.  I wish I lived closer to you guys, it sounds like you have alot of get togethers that I would love to attend. Have fun at the last supper on wed.

I took a small suitcase but I would have been fine with just my tote bag ... I had a couple magazines and a book, a change of clothes just in case (in addition to what I wore to the hospital the morning of my surgery), and my BlackBerry ... I refused to be without my BlackBerry. I can't even remember what else was in that suitcase ... I know I overpacked because I always do. Hopefully all will go well and you'll be sent home the day after surgery, so you really shouldn't need much at all. Pack light!

if "cen cal" means central california...the coastal people meet quite often, too, I think.... look for some of their get-togethers!

best wishes!

First off, congrats and good luck on your upcoming surgery!

Like Lori said, call and ask questions! Also, don't get TOO much protein ahead of time, you may find you don't care for it anymore after your surgery and you don't want to be stuck with a ton of it!

Chapstick for sure to take to the hospital...and I brought a pair of slippers although I THINK I just wore the bootie things they gave me, and I brought my own pillow (in a colored case!), which is especially helpful to hold against your tummy on the ride home to cushion any bumpy roads. Other than that, just pack light, you will probably sleep most of the time so you wont need a lot of things to read or do...I slep****ched TV, and visited with friends the whole time, never even got my bag out of the little closet in my room.

Can't wait to start seeing your post op successes!!!

Also, the central california folks get together from time to time too, keep your eye out for the posts!

The only things I used in my suitcase was my toothbrush, chapstick, mp3 player and hair brush.

I packed a separate bag with my own protein powder but left it at the hotel.  I'd make sure it was in my hospital bag if I was doing it again.  Their protein was awful.  I was able to choke down the first one by diluting in half.  The second one I wasn't able to get down at all.  Happily I was released that day so I was able to have my protein powder. lol

Vitamins...call your doctor or his nuritionist and ask what they recommend.

I'm a week out and I've been taking the following for a month:

Tropical Oasis Liquid Calcium Citrate, 1/2 Tbl  3x/day
Tropical Oasis Tropical  Plus Liquid Multi-Vitamins, 2Tbl/day
Tropical Oasis Liquid B-12, 5ml/day

For me, everything is too sweet so I'm glad I had a protein powder with only 1 carb!  AEven jello is too sweet.
