I've read a lot about people going to Mexico for their surgeries and PS, is it THAT much cheaper? Assuming this is the reason...  What about aftercare or if you have a problem or whatever??

I'd love to hear more, one day I'll need PS!!  But the idea scares me to go there for surgery!!!

I haven't priced PS but for WLS it is definitely that much cheaper.

Seriously, I can get sleeved for 10k in Mexico from one of 3 doctors who have excellent reputations or I can do it at home for 18k or more.

In Mexico, if you go to a reputable place, they treat you a lot better than in the US. The hospitals are more like resorts and the insurance industry hasn't ruined their health care yet so they don't do things like shove you out of the hospital as soon as they possibly can to save money. It's cheaper because the cost of living is cheaper and because insurance hasn't driven up the price of things.

Then, many of these surgeons are more experienced than US surgeons because they've been doing the surgeries before they were done in the US. This is particularly true for lap bands.

On the negative side, there are unscrupulous doctors who prey on the medical tourist industry. You have to watch out for them.

If I still lived in SoCal, I'd so be there, but now that I'm in NorCal, I'm hesitating because of the distance, among other things. But if I lived somewhere where the bariatric surgeons weren't that experienced and I had to travel to get to a good surgeon, I would seriously consider traveling to Mexico instead.

Crysti twoe people I know have used CosMed (Dr. Q) for their plastics.

Kim aka MadameButterfly is there right now. She said the care is fantastic and so is the doctor. She said the aftercare place is just like a resort too! She can discuss the price with you, but yes it is much cheaper. What she paid for all she had done was nothing short of incrediable because I know what I paid for all the work I had done here!

I am scare to go there for anything, but after hearing from Kim and all the good things she had to say....I would not hesitate for sure!

She should be home today and has been there since the 3rd. I know when she is up to it, she will be posting about it!

Milton Owens, who practices in So Cal, Long Beach and Rancho Cucamonga does occassionally do WLS in Mexico. If you have to self pay it may be an option. But the reviews of the the Mexico doctors have been overwhelmingly positive

Wow, very interesting! So, this is basically an option if you have to self-pay?  I have Insurance here and will most certainly have to pay SOME out of pocket but I know Insurance won't cover plastics, as they usually don't right? Good to know, I'll keep this in mind if there are such great reviews.  :) But what about aftercare?  Can you just see any doctor in the US for that or would you have to go to Mexico? Fascinating!   :)  Thanks Ladies!!

I had both my Lap Band and my plastics done in .  Price was originally my main factor in searching south of the border.  In doing my research, I found that there are fabulous surgeons outside of the .  In my opinion they are equal to or better than the popular surgeons here in the L.A. area.  I saved about $10,000 on my Lap Band by going to Dr. Ortiz in TJ.  While cost was the main factor at first, I found that every surgeon I consulted with here was trained by Dr. Ortiz.  Why would I pay more to go to someone who had done maybe 100 bands, when I could go to who trained them and who had done over 4000 bands?  I went back 2 months ago to Dr. Quiroz with Cosmed for my lower body lift.  Again, I saved about $10,000.  I chose Dr. Quiroz not only because of the price, but because he is an amazing surgeon.  I am one who ran into some complications after my plastics.  I had the choice of seeing a surgeon here for treatment or to take several trips back down to TJ.  I chose to go back to Dr. Quiroz because I trusted him to give me the best care.  Yes, it has been a big pain, but in the end it’s all working out.  Cost wise for my aftercare issues, I still came out ahead even with all the extra road trips.  He of course is taking care of everything for no cost, where as if I went to a surgeon here I would be self paying some major $$$.  Hope this helps!
