HELP NEEDED!!! Very Strange "Sleep Attacks"!!!

Hi Everyone, I'm 3 yrs. & 2 mos. out from wls (GB R-N-Y).  I've lost about 130 lbs so far.  Having undergone 7 additional surgeries, all unrelated to my gastric bypass surgery, I still have another 50 or so more lbs I want to lose.  Although I experienced some minor problems associated with having wls, nothing prepared me for the potentially devastaing symptoms I've been having that have gotten progressively worse over time. The problem: After I eat or drink ANYTHING, I lose consciousness and/or go into a deep, deep sleep for anywhere from 15 min. to 2 or 3 hrs.!!!  No one and nothing can wake me up.  At first it was just carbs or so I thought. Then it quickly became ANY kind of food or drink.  I never minded the "normal" type of dumping - I looked at that as an incentive not to cheat.  But the "sleeping" thing is a whole other matter. I've had to plan my entire life around when I'm going to eat because I know that I WILL be "out" once the meal or snack is over.  Eating out is all but completely impossible!!!  Even drinking a simple protein drink brings the "sleep attacks" on about 90%  of the time. I've had several tests - from an endocrinology stand point to neurological studies.  I'm going in for my fourth type of sleep study next weekend!  So far my doctor's have ruled out many possibilities!  We are testing for Narcolepsy next.  The last sleep study was inconclusive for Narcolepsy.  I just feel like we're all missing something that's right under our noses!  My diabetes is completely controlled with diet and exercise.  From my own personal experience during one of my surgeries - I know that having the gastric bypass has not "cured" me of diabetes related blood sugar issues. I just don't know how much my wacky blood sugar levels or insulin sensitivity may have to do with this problem overall. The one hundred million dollar question is: Has anyone experienced anything similar to my post-prandial "loss of consciousness" problems or know of anyone who has?  I am sooooooooo at my wits end!!! Thanks! Cheryl G.

I'm so sorry you are going through this sweetie!!! Sounds VERY scary!! Can you tell me how this started for you and when? Just curious because I swear sometimes after anything I eat, I get so sleepy and lethargic and sweaty. I haven't pinpointed what does it, it is so often. It is mildly irritating at times, but I haven't really given it much thought except maybe mild dumping to some extent, but who knows! I've never fallen asleep, just start yawning and feeling drained and break out in a sweat.  I will keep you in my prayers and I hope they figure it out soon and that it is something simple and easy to fix!!! God bless you sweetie!!!  biggest hugs, Becky

Cheryl, Have they worked you up for nesidioblastosis.  It is severe hypoglycemia that can affect  some people after RNY.  Google Nesidioblastosis. Liz

Wow - that is pretty severe! I do get VERY sleepy sometimes after I eat and it doesn't seem to make a difference what I've eaten although carbs seem to bring it on worse.

I wouldn't go so far to say that I lose consciousness but it is definitely something I don't feel I have control over when it hits me. In fact it happened this morning - fell asleep with my pen in hand as I was writing. I felt it coming on, but didn't have the energy to even put my head down.

Mine has gotten more infrequent so I don't worry too much about it. Hope you figure it out soon - it could definitely be dangerous!

Wow, sorry you are going through this. Like Becky, I'm curious about how far post op you were when in progressed to this level. I've never really dumped in the 'normal' way. If I have carbs I get really tired...like can't keep my eyes open, tired. But I can usually push through it. Please keep us updated. I'll be praying for you. Rachel
