I am still waiting for my date, but of course I am like a sponge right now to absorb all the information I can.  I was going thru my post op diet plan that my surgical group gave me.  I have been over it so many times and this time something caught my eye.    On the section that it starts talking about soft food it says cottage cheese is ok, but in (  )  it says take lactaid if needed.  Is it possible or probable that you can become lactose intolerant after surgery?  or is this just  because the body hasn't had dairy in like 4-6 weeks?  I have ready blogs on people that can't tolerate ice cream.  Not that i plan on eating ice cream.  but will I be able to drink 1% milk again? Hi Linda, I know that a lot of people have become lactose intolerant after WLS. Fortunately, I have not had that problem. =)

Thanks Katt.  I don't consume a lot of dairy, but I do enjoy a glass of cold milk on occasion.

it's hard to say what your new pouch will do with dairy.  I can handle milk just fine, either 1% or skim.  I love cheese...but eggs???  Eggs are a sensitive subject for my pouch, sometimes they're ok. Sometimes they don't go down so well.
You'll just have to cross that bridge when you get to it.
Good luck!!

I have heard that a lot of people have lactose issues after surgery, with the shortened digestive process I think the natural sugars can be a little much for our systems? So far I can have milk and yogurt but cottage cheese did not work well for me the first time I tried it?

I can't wait to see that you have a date!!!!

Hi Linda,  I LOVED milk, in any form, before surgery. Now? the only diary product I can consume, still after 4 years, is half and half in my coffee. Anything else, I get deathly ill.....ugh.....Try dumping while you're sick as a dog from lactose intolerances as well. Boy is that NOT fun!!  I think I can tolerate the half and half (in small amounts, such as in my coffee) cause there is a smaller amount of milk sugars in the cream, rather than any kind of milk, which is high in milk sugars. I tried eating a bowl of cereal one morning using half and half instead of milk. Ooops! Dumped again! Too much quanity..... oh well.....  This is the gig we signed up for ! No regrets!! Hope this helps!

Thanks to all. I guess that is just part of the wild ride huh?  I will have to wait and see what my body is going to do.   Linda

I think it says that for people who ARE lactose intolerant, or who WERE before surgery, in case they still are after surgery. I don't have any problem with dairy...

The not eating ice cream is more a sugar thing than a dairy product thing, at least for me it is that way.  I can (and do sometimes) eat no sugar added ice cream, or sugar free ice cream. I do fine with FF frozen yogurt, and even McDonalds "ice cream" cone (which is a low fat milk product)...

So...hope that helps!! It's great that you are taking the time to read over the food choices, and options... planning to be healthy, indeed!! :)

See you soon...
