I missed food so much early out. Even food I never liked before. I missed my most reliable and most comforting friend (sad huh?). As the weight loss kept coming, I forgot all about my attachment to food and revelled in the new me. Now at 4 years out, that attachment has reared its ugly head, and I've been gaining weight. So, to answer your question, yes it goes away, but its best to face and deal with whatever is keeping you attached to food right now. This is a long journey, understanding our addiction is a complicated and long process. But we an do it! Wishing you well, RAchel

Hi Cate, Glad you poked on in here.  I gotta say I didn't miss food in the begining.  But I have my days now.  I dont know how anyone can REALLY say they dont  miss food at least to some level.  But that is only my opinion.  Good luck on your journey and post often we are a great bunch here , and we dont bite(lol)

I am still waiting for a surgery date.......... and hoping my "addiction" to food will go the way of my addiction to smoking.  I quit smoking on January 21st and at first it was very hard but now I don't think of it hardly at all.  I'm hoping food is the same way.

Hi Cate, Welcome to the Cali Board.  After surgery (after the head hunger especially) you learn to "eat to live" and not "live to eat".   At first, I missed food, but I was so scared that I would get sick that I did not try it.  I don't miss eating the amounts of food that I used to eat.  I am more proud of wearing size medium /size 8 clothing and being a healtier person and being able to run 5k's/10k's and train for a half marathon.  I can only speak for myself; but I as get further out from surgery, I have found myself slipping back into my old habits but then I remind myself as to why I had surgery in the first place.  That usually does the trick of reigning myself back in. Hey Cate!  Welcome to our little corner of OH!  Everyone is terrific, so please don't lurk and come in and have fun with us!  I had surgery back on 10/1/07 and am down a total of 114#s.  I gotta say, everyone will say to you if you hang around us long enough..lol, "Don't forget they operated on your stomach, not on your head!".  Boy, does that resonate with me...I defintely get head hunger, if I drink some water, it will usually pass.  Like the other Kim wrote, I'm too happy with how much energy I have, wearing smaller sizes, not being afraid when I see the waitress leading me to a booth now, to think too much about food.  I like being able to get full so quickly.  I have to say when something tastes really good, sometimes I'm bummed that I can't eat as much as I used to...isn't that funny?  Man, talk about addiction.   Take care and stay tuned in with us...xo  Kim

Cate welcome to the boards and congrats on your surgery

No one ever said to me that life would be smooth after wls in terms of missing food....yeah I missed it and wanted it, but as the saying goes.....nothing tastes as good as thin feels.

You learn over period of time that you value the way you feel more than you do that extra bite of something...or pushing the envelop. I had to learn it the hard way, but at nearly 6 years out...I rather stay trim than eat!

Good luck to you and keep on posting....lurking is fun, but getting involved is more fun!
