Thank you, Neely for taking the time to compose such a lengthy and informative response. I did not experience any problem with my PCP sending in a referral for weight loss surgery when I requested it. She started the ball rolling right away, and about 3 weeks later I was sent an appointment for my first bariatric surgery orientation class. I attended that last month, and have an appt. with my surgeon towards the end of this month. There was no 6 month weight loss required before referral. They told us that they need us to lose some weight to shrink the liver, to make it easier to access the stomach, and showed us some videos of the surgeries and the liver. I can understand the need for that, but don't know whether losing 10% of my body weight is necessary just to shrink the liver. When you're as heavy as me, 10% is nearly 40 lbs. And that amount will take some time to lose. I tried following the diet they gave me, which amounted to about 1200 calories a day, and left me feeling ravenously hungry. I kept eating more than I was supposed to because it wasn't enough to fill me up. So now I've switched to the Atkins diet, where I can eat more freely with larger quantities, as long as I stay away from carbs. And so far, that seems to be going well. I will talk with my surgeon about the weight loss concerns when I see him. I don't know that I want to go through all the hassle of appealing the lose-weight mandate, but maybe if I can't lose enough, it will be an option I might want to explore. I wish you luck with your journey too. ----------Penny
