Hi! Congrats on your upcoming surgery. WLS can differ greatly depending on the person's anatomy, the surgeon, and other factors. But I can say you will be altered, so prepare your mind to say goodbye to your old friend food. Start now working on your frame of mind (because surgery only works on your tummy). Know your post op diet back and forth and have all the food you need ready to go. Do your level best to stay complient with your diet. That helps alot with the food challenges. My DH was very supportive of my surgery, but my sister was against it. We're very close, but she admitted she was jealous. Didn't come see me in the hospital, and has never uttered a word about my weight loss, how I'm feeling, etc (even after 4 years). All I can say, is I can't control how she feels, so I just moved on. We're still close, because she's my sister and I love her no matter what. You should start a new thread for your questions. More people will read/respond that way. Wishing you well, RAchel

I was scared to death before WLS and always thinking about if I should proceed to do it or not.  Even right before I was knocked out, I was scared. Today, I don't regret it.  I have had WLS issues (severe abdominal pain) where doctor's can't pinpoint why.....Read my profile....In fact, I had abdominal pain last night which almost required for me to go to ER for the 5th time within a year.  Everyone is different.  Some folks don't have issues at all..... With the pain I go through now and then, I personally think WLS and the results it's given me is well worth it. It's a personal choice and I did choose to have WLS with the understanding that there may be complications. Good luck and email me if you have further questions. Oh, and like Helen says, you have to always do it right!  Drink water, exercise, eat right, etc....Keep in mind, for the rest of your life....

Hey Andrea, For sure the decision needs to be yours, and yours alone..no one can make it for you. Personally I have to agree with Helen, in that I wonder why I waited so long..but the timing really was perfect for me, and I am so thankful that I waited, because there is so much that I appreciate more, than I think I ever would have had I had it done years ago. I was 47 when I had my surgery, and knew that it was no other way for me...if I wanted to be thin and live a healthy life, this was the change that was going to work for me. My social settings have changed alot, in that I am now free to be the outgoing, fun person that I've always been inside, but was too afraid to attract too much attention because I was so big. Eating wise, really, the only thing that has changed for me now is that I eat less. I can pretty much eat anything...I just have to be very careful with dessert type things. But, really, I'm just now eating like a think person eats......everything in moderation. You just need to be sure to get the protein in. Many times I will order a salad, and eat all the protein stuff first, because the lettuce just takes up too much space in my pouch, with very little nutrients, and no protein. I went out to dinner 4 days post op.....I drank water, and had the best time with my friends!!! I wish you the best!!

Hello. I am only 2 weeks post-op, so I don't yet have the wisdom of the others yet. I will say, though, that these two weeks have been easier than I thought. I have not once regretted this choice. I know for me, as the others have said, it was a very personal decision. A week before the surgery, my father and brother decided to tell me their true feelings. They were against it!! I was shocked. I thought they were in total support. They want the best for me, but they agreed they I enjoyed food way too much to have this surgery. I disagreed with them and did not post pone the surgery like they requested. I had made the decision for ME and not ANYONE else. I knew I could handle it. Yes, I love food, but I am learning to make healthier choices and the good thing about this new "tool" is that you are forced to control your portions. I have been extremely lucky, in that, I have not had any serious problems. Staying on the liquid diet wasn't fun. But, what's a week, when you are getting a new lease on life? I am now on soft foods and getting bored with that. I can't wait for Subway and El Pollo Loco. But, I am faithful to my Doctors orders, because I do not want to screw this up. So, when you decide to do this, you must have it in your head, that you will be faithful. Because, if you're not, you're only hurting yourself. A friend of mine told me last week, that she has a customer that just had the surgery 6 weeks ago and she has already learned how to cheat. I immediately told her, stop, I don't want to hear anymore. She is obviously, not as determined. So, it's all in your head. If you don't think you can do this, you probably can't. But, if you think you can, you probably can. Sorry, if I have mumbled on, this is my first post ever and your question, caught my eye. I hope I was able to help, at least a little. Good luck and remember, do this for YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am 6 weeks post op and doing well.  I did have some problems in hospital the day after surgery.  Because my surgery was postponed by several hours and I had nothing to drink all day (originally scheduled for 730 am and surgery didnt start until after 5 pm!) I got dehydrated and was kept in for 2 days instead of the 1 I was told.  Otherwise all has been good.  Now at 6 weeks here is my approximate daily meals Breakfast - 1 egg, ham, 1/2 slice toast (sometimes I exchange protein drink if I'm in a hurry), snack - fruit and protein drink, lunch - ground beef or chicken with fruit, snack - 1/2 cup milk or yougurt, maybe some nuts, dinner - chicken or fish, veggie and cottage cheese and snack - protein drink and maybe crackers.  I fill in during the day with my fluids of water, tea (decaf), SF popsicles, crystal light etc.  I worked on doing all of this starting in January 08 and had surgery April 18.  I have lost a total of 55 lbs.  I really wanted to started before surgery so all the things necessary would be 2nd nature by my post op days.  It has been a lot easier that way  for me at least
