Questions regarding Splenda

Hello everyone,   Is splenda safe to use or is it just as bad as aspartame? The lastest I have heard is that it isn't good for us and that the advertising that is made from sugar is bogus. What do you all think? I really like splenda and don't know what I would use in place of it. Any suggestions?

Hi nurse,

From all I know and had discussed with a dietician, Splenda at worst, is no worse than other sweeteners.  It is sugar based and I love it too.  I haven't bought sugar in years and as far as I can tell, Splenda has not caused any health problems.  The dietician told me aspertame is primarily an amino acid.  I can't verify this one way or the other but I always thought it was basically a "chemical".  It sure has a chemical taste to it.

I have never read about any dangers with Splenda.  I am curious to see other responses.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sucralose you can go there and read about it. I use Splenda, I do not dump from spenda, I do not get a head ache from it.

I agree, I don't get a headache from splenda either. But from what I have heard, it turns to formalydahyde like aspartame. I will check out the website you provided. Thank you for you reply.

I use Stevia, the herbal sweetener. Many RNY patients don't agree with sugar substitutes and I opted for this one that is all natural. Have to be careful though, as it's really sweet, so expriment with smaller amounts in coffee or iced tea, etc. I got my Stevia at Trader Joes. They have single packets (like the sugar substitues do) or you can get it in a plastic jar, that has a spoon insert side or a shaker side to the top. I use it in oatmeal every morning, and my wife puts it's in her coffee. I also put it on cut strawberries for a treat. DAVE
