Has anyone had any trouble after RNY with their red blood cell counts?  A friend of mine is driving herself crazy thinking she might have leukemia.  Thanks for any answers you can provide me with. JudyAnne

I hope she is wrong in her thinking, too.  She has so much other stress in her life right now. And . . . you are most welcome!

have they been tracking their lab results? is this  a sudden change or has it been coming on?

She has been feeling really run down and thought she was maybe anemic.  She went for her lab work and everything was fine except the LARGE red blood cell count.  She knows it's not anemia, B12 deficiency, iron deficiency, etc.  Now the fear of leukemia is on her mind.  She's really hoping that is might be some side effect of RNY.  She is about 4 years out.

I had a problem with my white blood cell count for about a year following surgery...it's stabalized now... it was LOW...weird...they couldn't find any reason, although I went to a hematologist. Tell your friend to pursue it, but not to stress. It may be just the body finding its balance for some reason...

best wishes to her!

Hi JudyAnne, Yes, I had trouble. I was very very low.....they gave me 4 blood transfusions of packed red blood cells and it just would go back down. They blamed it on my RNY but we later found a huge fibroid in my blood stream outside the uterus. It was causing me to have extremely heavy periods. Since they did a hysterectomy, I am A-OK! This tells me it had nothing to do with my RNY. Ask her if she has heavy periods....my doc never thought of looking there. How are you?

I'm doing okay, I guess!  I was treated for Sinusitis and double ear infections last Tuesday and put on antibiotics.  Now my stomach is in a turmoil.  I just read that one of the side effects of antibiotics is colitis and also severe stomach pains.  Oh, well.  The other problems have cleared up and tomorrow is the last morning for the antibiotics. How are you doing?  How is my lovable Dr. Kent? JudyAnne

Hi there, So sorry about your illness.....I always get stomach pain when I take nasty antibiotics! UGH! Dr. Kents is good....I suppose. I haven't seen him since the consult but I see him in a couple of weeks for my preop. Is that how yours experience was also? You had the consult, then the preop, then the surgery? Did you stay at the Recovery Retreat? What was your experience like? Thanks! I am getting nervous!
