I don't know about all y'all - but today has been pure hell! It's staff appreciation week, or something like that, at school so their ever-so-kind way of thanking us for whatever it by bringin in TONS of yummy food! I did great and didn't touch a crumb... all I've had today is water, coffee - er... uh... LOTS of coffee and some chicken broth. Then I came home and my daughter puts this bucket of popcorn in my face... did I mention I L O V E popcorn??? I politely asked her to take that bucket far away from me. Anyway - I feel a bit hungry but not starved... my stresses are pulling a bit as well. My goal is to make it through today, then deal with tomorrow as it comes! Hope the rest of you are doing well! C h e e r s, gene

Well, so far, all is well for me.  I had my split pea soup for lunch and was full quick.  I am planning on a shake and more soup tonight.  Carbs?  I keep walking past some pretzels, but they are not winning this battle today.  I have also been steadly drinking my AchieveOne.  Tomorrow dinner is the tuna patties, Sheryl mentioned.  Hoping for yummy!!

Leann Interesting you brought up pretzels.  I just read about them in Kaye Bailey's blog.  I am going to post this because I think it is inteesting and it is something I didn't know a whole lot about:

Question: What are slider foods?

In a malabsorptive procedure the pouch is made and the stoma or outlet is attached to the lower part of the middle intestine called the jejunum. The majority of caloric absorption takes place in the jejunum, so depending upon where your surgeon created the outlet the level of absorption can vary. Skilled surgeons will adjust the length of intestine bypassed according to their patient's projected needs based on dieting history and pre-op psychological screening.

Slider foods slide right through the stoma into the jejunum. My first test of the slider foods was graham crackers and coffee for my after work snack. Now imagine, I could eat a stack of graham crackers and wa**** right through the pouch with the coffee and never feel any satiation. What resulted was an easily absorbed slurry that my jejunum sucked up like a sponge - it didn't have to do any work to absorb this simple carbohydrate slurry. Of course, weight gain resulted and I had to give up this little indulgence. Another popular slider food is pretzels. I speak with post-ops all the time who are addicted to pretzels - again, this is a simple carb that your jejunum is very happy to receive and convert to fat. Traditionally dieters are encouraged to eat pretzels or popcorn - fat free and fiber, right? But that doesn't work so well for us. Giving our re-routed bodies these simple carbs is dangerous because our bodies have spent years perfect the art of fat storage - slider foods are to the body a great big lottery win.

By the way, in my example I spoke of a slurry from graham crackers and coffee. Simple carbs, however, will slide right through without the added benefit of a liquid. And several others can talk about cheese nip crackers, popcorn, mashed potatoes, ice cream/yogurt etc.

Lots of times I hear, "But I don't like that uncomfortable tight feeling of solid protein in my pouch." But the very purpose of the pouch is to signal fullness, which often comes by way of slight discomfort when we are eating in compliance with our bariatric owner's manual. The slider foods will never ever signal fullness. They are dangerous and in most cases non-nutritional. When I feel that full-pouch discomfort I try to mentally psych myself up, "YEAH-BABY! The pouch is on the job!!" Silly, but whatever works.

Thanks for the info Sheryl.  Perry had brought 2 bags of them for our road trip to Washington to visit family.  I stayed completely away from them during the trip.  Now that we are home, he has them on a table here at work.  In case you did not know, we live upstairs from where we work.  So it is pretty hard (or easy) with the food HERE!  It would figure that pretzels not the greatest choice for us.  AND the silliest thing, is that I do not like the taste of them.  Pretty dry and dull, to me.  Maybe I should crush them for breadcrumbs?

That's really interesting. Totally explains why my 'little indulgances' of Gold fish crackers have had such a negative effect on me. I'm struggling again today. Made lasagna for the family. Scraped the remainer off the kids plates and gobbled it down Tomorrow is another day!

I have given up popcorn since I did the 5DPT! It is one of my faves and my daughter works at a movie theater so we get free movies, popcorn, and soda. Popcorn is a HUGE weakness for me, especially movie theater popcorn!!! lol I can't be trusted with it because it is a slider food and it doesn't make me full ever!!!  So, wish me luck on avoiding this heavenly treat! I went to the movies today and was fine with just my Starbucks, but I had taken a protein bar in case I got the munchies!!!   Thanks for posting this, it is interesting reading. Who would think popcorn would be a slider food, I never would have preop!!
