TGIF'S MASHED POTATOES - LONG POST

I am one month post op that this has been one crazy and roller coaster month.  The pain, I don't want to remember.  I had an episode of dumping last week, did not know that is what I was experiencing.   I heard of dumping but hearing and experiencing is two totally different things.

I ate some mashed potatoes at  TGIF's last Wednesday   I had severe stomach cramping, nausea and loose stool, from 11:30 am. to 1:30p.m. on Thursday.  At 11:00 p.m.,  Wednesday, I went to Kaiser ER, as instructed by the Kaiser on-call Nurse.  (Kaiser Riverside ER  had no idea what to do with me, because they do not perform the WLS, it is performed at Kaiser Harbor City, so the right hand does not know what the left has done and it is all computer based, my entire history is on the Kaiser intranet.)

I was given a pain shot and sent home still in pain and $40.00 worth of meds ($10 co-pay for each one).  Went to sleep at 1:00am and woke in pain at 5:00 a.m., e-mailed my surgeon and was told not to take the meds, that were prescribed, too late I had taken the first dose for pain, stool softener, and zantac, .So my surgeon told me, “Your RNY is working, it was designed to do just that if I ate something high in fat, sugar or flour,  I am suppose to dump.  Well dump and pain is not what I thought. I was in pain for 26 hours!!!   TGIF’s Mashed Potatoes: Potatoes, heavy cream, butter, cheese and green onions) I don't like dumping refuse to have to experience that again.  I will never eat mashed potatoes at TGIF's again.  So to make a long story short, I lost 33 lbs in 1 month. I love my new pouch. Even though I abused it on last week.

Shar Welcome to food roulette.  You will find days when nothing agrees with your pouchie. Dumping is good, not pleasant to experience but a lesson learned.  It is your bodies way of saying "You messed up and don't eat that again"  I wish I dumped more than I do, but I can eat almost anything with no side effects. 33 lbs is great.  Your journey is just beginning so enjoy every moment, good and bad.  You will find the good outweigh the bad. Much success in your journey Sheryl

You never forget your first dumping experience!!  I was at an OH lunch in Modesto.  Had some cream soup...Later I had some ham.  My dump lasted for 12-14 hours!!  I finally called my PCP's on call doctor.  He said I could take some Imodium AD.  It was a godsend.  Test every new food...Ask the pouch it this new item is OK.  She'll let you know soon enough.  Stick with boring food for awhile.  It really does get better over the next few weeks.  THE POUCH WORKS!!  Brian   PS When you start to feel that rumbling in the tummy...stop all foods.  Just wait and see.

Aww Shardon, I am glad you are feeling better.  I have found instant mashed potatos and KFC mashed potatos are the best for me.   Annabelle
