Ok, as you may know, my surgery has already been approved, I am just waiting for the cardiologist to clear me. But my question is......we had a pot luck at work today. Tons of food. But I felt that I had almost no control.  I mean there were healthy foods too, but of course I ate all the wrong food but I keep justifying it in my head with thoughts like...well once I have my surgery I won't be able to eat like this so I might as well enjoy it now.  I didn't have that mentality before I was approved because I was afraid of gaining more weight.  Has anyone else out there experienced this.  I feel like I want to eat everything I can before I have the surgery.  HELP my eating is out of control

Well, first of all that being out of control got alot of in the position we were/are in.  But the bottom line you behaved until you were approved and now you are out of contol again.  You still need to be afraid of gaining mor wt preop too.  Will your surgeon cancel your surgery if you go up in wt?  You know it is easier for the surgeon to do your surgery if you take off some wt though.  The fat that is inside your abdomen that you cannot see and I can tell you on most of us it is aplenty.  That can cover the inside of your abdomen and make it very difficult to see and also can affect our livers and make them vrey fatty.  The more that we can do to reduce or risks the better off we are.  There is not real need to have a last meal phenomena as the food will still be there when all is said and done. It became for me quality over quantity. Many people experience what you are going thru.  Just brush yourself off and walk away the next time you eat is a new beginning. Best of luck to  you Liz

Wow! I thought I was the only one who was experiencing this. I have not been approved yet but I am going to hopefully be having my surgery with Leport as well.  Today at work we had a potluck too and I am enjoying a nice piece of carrot cake..... right now. It's really a shame and I don't want to gain anymore, expecially since the surgery has not been approved yet but I do not know what to do to stop. Please help me too!

This is what you have to remember... Your health is important and the 5 seconds of instant gratification can turn into pounds on a dime! Believe me, I understand what you're going through. The week before my surgery, I ate 1/2 a pizza all by myself (I used to be able to eat a whole pizza)! I also ate the biggest burger at Jack in the Box, fries and a shake...Thank G-d I didn't gain anything but I put so much pressure on myself because I was scared that I would gain and the Surgeon would cancel my surgery! Bottom line, eating that food wasn't worth the stress! There's a point here, I swear! The point is that later on down the line, you'll be able to eat a little bit of this and a little bit of that within reason (as long as you keep it within reason).  So you won't be "safe" from the bad foods forever BUT your "tool" will help you control yourself so by the time you are able to eat the bad stuff, you'll probably not want to anyway! Congrats! You're taking control of your life! Celebrate your decision by making better food decisions but please- don't beat yourself up over mistakes- you'll probably never be perfect but know that your surgery will really help you stay on track if you take total advantage of it! SO in conclusion- you'll be fine! Just behave yourself and start making the right choices starting NOW! Cheers!

Hi Linda Wow, that sounds like I wrote that.....I did this before surgery for sure....I think I had 20 "last lunches" with friends and family....went to all the places I love (sometimes more than once) because I "wouldn't be able to eat that after surgery"  I think we have all done that to some extent....like the others said, don't beat yourself up..... Just try to make the right choices....but believe me, if you are like me, once you have surgery not only will you not be able to eat the crap you eat now.....you won't want to.... I don't miss any of the junk I used to eat...other than french fries and I even have a couple of fries not and then (when I am eating out with friends and they order fries) and just those 2 or 3 fries satisfies my taste....I truly am trying to make the life change necessary and I DO NOT want to gain this weight back - ever....I want to use my tool to the max. Hang in there girlfriend.....we are all here for you and you will be a success.  Are we going to see you at coffee the end of the month?

Hi Jean Thanks for support .  Yes I will see you at Starbucks.  That is Memorial Weekend, so I wasn't sure if you all were still going to have it, but I plan on being there.  It was great meeting all of you last month.

Hey Linda, I think we have all been there.  I know I have.  I took a "farewell tour" of all my favorite eating places, and then... I buckled down and followed my pre-op diet and pretty much I have stayed on track.  Don't be too hard on yourself.  Once you have your surgery and you start seeing and feeling the results, you will be able to resist any urge to stray.  Note:  I said pretty much stayed on track.  I still indulge from time to time.

Like, everyone said, don't beat yourself up over things already done! This happened to most of us and I'm sure it is normal. But like everyone else has said, last suppers aren't really necessary because you will be able to eat those things later if you still want to, within reason. You probably won't want to though, that is the good news!!!  It is important to shrink your liver as much as possible preop so your surgery is as safe as possible! And some surgeons will cancel if you've gained weight. It's not worth the risk!! Think of how upset you will be if it is cancelled because you had to have that one last thing!! The satisfaction you get from those moments of eating are sooooo minimal to the satisfaction of your WLS success!!! Trust me, you will learn to "eat to live, instead of living to eat" I NEVER thought that was possible, but it is!  Hang in there and just try to make better choices! Here are a few things I did preop to help start me off right... eat on a small plate or bowl eat with small fork and spoon start practicing sipping water constantly start practicing eating slower and chewing slowly weigh or measure what you are eating and be aware of portion sizes It is a start, and believe me, we ALL know how hard it is!!! YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!!!              ,  Becky

Thanks Becky.  Great advise.  Your right.  I would be crushed if I had to wait longer to have the surgery because of a piece of cheesecake
