my first post here
I took my first step today (besides months of research).
Saw my internist to get her opinion on having lap band surgery. I half expected her to shoot me down. I told her my insurance requires a co-morbid condition. Although I have many, there is only one that I have that they will accept, hypertension, which I have just recently developed. After giving me the speech about how serious it is, she gave me her recommendation for a surgeon. I was so happy that the 1st step was successful, and also a little shocked to realize that I really am so fat that I qualify in her eyes (she is very conservative).
I've read a lot of posts from people that have had a hard time getting qualified, I think for me that will be the hardest part--until I know for sure the insurance co says yes, I'll be wondering if this will ever happen at all. I've had several previous laparoscopic surgeries, so I think I know what to expext there, and from now until then I will be preparing for life after banding.
My insurance, TriCare Standard just started covering this procedure this year--anyone out there who has used the same company? What was your experience?
Thanks, I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone here!

Hi, I am with Tricare Prime. I was 42.9 with several co morbidies. I chose to go with RNY. I am so thankful for this new life I have been given. I had surgery on Feb 12, 08 and have lost 52 lbs to date. I was approved with Tri Care in about a week. Good luck and keep us posted! Where are you stationed? We are in Lemoore, CA.
