Any type 1's?

Any type I diabetics?  How do you correct a low after WLS, without dumping from the quick sugar?  I correct now, prior to surgery with juice.  Am worried I'll have many lows after surgery until I get my insulin levels corrected, and wonder how one corrects with a fast sugar  since after WLS sugars aren't tolerated well.

I don't know anything about diabeties, but I do know that not everyone dumps on sugar after wls.  I can drink 8 oz of orange juice and one day I even ate a HagaanDaz Chocolate Coated Ice Cream (shame on me!) and I didn't dump.   Nothing has made me dump (I wi**** did), but that's just me.   It's a very good question - I suggest you ask your surgeon, because if you do dump, you'll need to know what options you have.

Thanks for your reply.  It seems there are no type 1 s out there, kinda scarey.  By the way, many, many congrats on achieving your weight loss goal.  Your progress is incredible and quite an inspiration.  Fern

Oh, sure there is a handful of Type 1's on this site. I have seen a few postings. In fact, a Type 1 just asked for some support on the diabetes forum and there was a good conservation about the using a pump before/during/after WLS. Here are the links: http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/diabetes/a,messageboard/action,replies/board_id,4854/cat_id,4454/topic_id,3598444/

Also, not all WLS create sugar intolerance and not all people react the same to WLS that potentially do.  Check out all the surgeries and how they will affect you and then with the help of your doctor you can make an educated decision on which surgery is best for your situation.

I have been a Type I diabetic for 43 years.  I am now 53, and had RNY this past July.  While I was in the hopsital, my BS dropped to 39.  Obviously the nurses freaked out and pushed OJ on me.  I was frightened as I was told straight juice would cause dumping.  It didn't.  In fact, I don't dump at all, which can be a good thing or a bad thing.  I can eat anything, so when I drop, (which I do all the time), I drink OJ, eat hard candy, glucose tablets, glucose gel, etc.)  I am on the insulin pump and have got it pretty dialed in.  But as you know, stress effects one's glucose levels and make you go crazy.  I don't want to encourage you to drink OJ or eat candy, as everybody is different, but I am not effected by dumping. Good luck.

Cindy,  many thanks for your reply, the first type 1, RNY, pumping person I've spoke with.  How long did they have you disconnected from your pump?  Did you turn your basals down about half?  How successful has your surgery been?  Diabetes much improved?  I'm also a type 2, so expect that to greately improve.  Thanks for sharing.  Fern

I didn't take the pump off at all.  They wanted me to as nobody had ever dealt with one in the hospital.  So I compromised and cut my basal down (to suit them).  It was kind of strange as I was the first person with a pump to go throught the program; they weren't wuite sure how to do things.  Then they hung IV dextrose instead of saline or lactated ringers.  But overall, I had no problems.  But my weight loss has been a little slower than most (probably due to 43 years of insulin).  After surgery, my insulin requirements went down two-thirds, and they discontinued my other meds with the excption of Cozaar to maintain my kidneys and lovastatin for my cholesterol (heart health).
