Hi All, OK....I know it's been awhile. I have been busy increasing my cardio and even got on snowshoes and did some cross-country skiing at the end of the Winter. I am soooooooo sick of the plateaus I have been hitting it is frustrating. I stay up and down between four pounds for a month to a month and a half at a time.....does anyone have this problem?. I expected plateaus but I lose four pounds and play this yo-yo game for a month at a time ...up four, down four, up four down four.....gesh!!! can any of you tell me if you have experienced such fluctuations so often and what is the longest plateau you were on.....how long did it last?...your help and support is really appreciated over here.  Luv ya all, Laura

Howdy Stranger....good to see you post!

I did this so much during my wl journey especially in the first year or so. I would get so frustrated that I would have to stay away from the scale. Just know that as long as you are following your program, the weight will eventually come off. You just have to trust that and be super honest with your food and water intake!

Keep up the good work Laurie and be patient and come around more often gf!!!

Happy skiing!! Bounce

Hi, Laura!
I'm just past 10 weeks out from surgery, and a very similar thing happened to me.   I've had a plateau (at least I thought that's what it was) for most of that time.  I lost 14 pounds the first week and then nothing.  It was very frustrating!  I weighed every day, and it drove me CRAZY, but looking back, I'm glad I did it, because if I hadn't, I never would have known that something was wrong.

I tried everything -- more water, more exercise, no exercise, less carbs, more carbs, less calories more calories!
My program instructs me to have between 80-100 grams of protein a day -- and that's EXACTLY what I was doing.  The only thing is, that was apparently just enough protein to keep me stalled!  It seems like very few people have my experience, as most people seem to be able to lose even on 65 grams a day or so! I have NO idea why I need more than the average WLS patient, but after almost being at my wit's end (I mean, I HAVE just allowed myself to go under the knife -- I have made the ultimate decision to lose weight), I went to my surgeon in tears.  He gave me specific instructions to increase my protein to nearly 150 grams a day.  I get 96 grams a day via my protein shakes and the rest from food.  The result?  I'm now losing 1 pound or more a day, which is what I'm supposed to be losing. Since then, I've done a lot of research online, and found several "protein needs" calculators that tell you how many grams of protein you should be getting for your weight.  I was shocked to find that my needs at my current weight are 121 to 180 grams a day!!  Yikes!  No wonder I wasn't losing anything! Now just because that's what he told me, I'm not telling you to do the same.  I'm just sharing with you, because girl -- I have been there.  Do exactly what your doctor tells you; it's likely that what he's telling you will work for you, like it does for most people.  But my point in sharing my story with you is that if you're still having this problem after a few weeks, don't be afraid to go back and ask questions.  I would probably be 30 pounds less than I am right now if I'd known THEN what I know NOW!  There is a purpose and a season for everything, so I know the Lord had a purpose in my life for it, but it was still no fun going through that!

Awesome info!

I did a search for protein calculators, and they all say something different. The one at UnJury tells me I need 60g. The one at a bodybuilding site says I need 119g for health, but 300g for bodybuilding (which I am not doing).

This one seemed the most reasonable: http://www.global-fitness.com/proteincalc.php

It took into account age, sex, life style, and goals. It says I need 119g, so I am going to work on really upping it, since I currently get around 80g per day.
