Asterisks??? What's UP???

In the past month or so, I've noticed that people's posts have these *** in them where potentially, and randomly selected letters that COULD spell out some profanity/slang are ***'d out.
I thought that the post-ers were doing it to be humorous, until it happened in one of my posts. I wrote the words "i****ched", (see....it happened again! I did not type in those asterisks) and it came out printed with asterisks. Not being a person who speaks so crudely, I had to look up the bleeped out letters on a slang vocabulary website to see what I had inadvertently typed.
What is this all about? It makes it appear that people are actually CALLING ATTENTION TO these "bad words"...where, if they were left alone, they are simply regular words.
OH censors...or web gurus...or moderator... what is this for???
thanks...

THANK YOU, Darlene!!
Not only did I get my asterisks removed, but I also got HTML Editor #2 set as my default one so... I can have....
PARAGRAPHS again!! without changing the editor on every post...
you rocked my socks off!
Thanks...
