Hey whats up everybody? My name is Uasia and I just moved to Oakland from Boston, Ma. I had gastric-bypass surgery 10-25-07. I was just  wondering who was from Oakland on this site and if anyone can refer me to a good doctor for my follow up care. Also, does anybody know of any support groups? I looking forward to hearing from everyone. Thanks

Hello Uasia, Welcome to the bay area, I'm the Antioch/Brentwood Area (East Contra Costa County) 30-45 min. away from you.  For my RNY Dr. Horcico Ashbun is great, he's in Concord.

I see Dr. Barry Sanchez in Burlingame-probably a 25 minute drive for you or so. The support group at Mills Penninsula here is great--about 50-60 people attend each month.

Here are the details:

The Mills-Peninsula Bariatric Surgery Support Group 1-800-559-9960

[email protected]
Meets on the 1st Saturday of every month at Peninsula Hospital, in the Sierra Room on the  ground floor.

This is a group of very devoted individuals that have the following goals:

  • Provide support and assistance to one another.
  • Propagate information about the surgery both within the group and to the communities around us.
  • Share experiences and answer each others questions.
  • Provide a safe, non judgmental and comfortable environment in which to share.

Laura Matteucci, R.N., is the Mills-Peninsula Hospital Bariatric Coordinator. The support group meets at Mills-Peninsula Hospital in Burlingame, Ca the first Saturday of the month at 9:30 am at the Sierra Room on the ground floor. Patients e-mails can be added to the groups mailing list so that patients can be reminded 1 week prior to the meeting each month.

Hi there! Welcome to the Bay Area...you are gonna love the weather here. Possibly the nearest clinic to Oakland is Alta Bates Summit Medical Center Here is a link to the clinic on line. http://www.summitmed.org/clinical/bariatricintro.html Unfortunately, the online site does not list support group meetings.  You have to call.  Helen and Myra are two WLS alums who work there.  They are both nice and helpful. There happens to be a free Orientation meeting there tonight (4/8) from 6-8pm.  Maybe call and see if they have space and that way you can check them out quickly and easily, if you are free tonight. I am in Concord and agree that Dr. Asbun is the best there is.  His partner Dr. Otero is excellent as well.  We also have a support group at the hospital where the surgery is done and the people there are great.

Welcome Uasia!  I was born and raised in Oakland.  I don't live there anymore, but my family does. I'm 10min away.  I live in the Albany/Berkeley area.  I'm going through the same thing.  The drive to Modesto was too much for me.  Anyway, I'm looking at some doctors in the Berkeley area.  I will let you know if I find someone who takes care of WLS patients.
