Options Classes - Kaiser
Well today I had the orientation at Kaiser for WLS. It was very informative, even including some information I didn't know, having researched the past 4 months. They told us all about the 24 week Options class that you need before you qualify for the surgery. Now when I first heard about the class requirement I was like, "oh great, let's just put it off even LONGER.. I just want it done already!!". But hearing from a few people who have gone through it and going to the orientation today I am actually looking forward to completing the class before I go through with the surgery. At first they said they didn't know when the next classes would start, and that it could be three to four months before one starts and that kinda sucked. But after the doctor finished talking to us, the nurse came back in and said they have one starting in Riverside on April 18th! That's like, soon! So I have to wait for an official "you're in" letter, but it looks good so far. Wish me luck, and thanks to everyone who has been so supportive so far. You guys are amazing!
I too have Kaiser in southern CA. I actually had a medically supervised class of 8 months in 2002, but still needed their class. I "got lucky" and my class was the last one to be 8 weeks duration in October, 2005. But the 8 weeks turned into 12-13 weeks with the holidays and days off. These nutrition or option classes are designed to help you understand proper nutrition and what you'll actually be facing after surgery. I'd also urge you to attend local support group classes. Although I have Kaiser insurance, Dr. Suh did my surgery through Crown Bariatric in Corona--where most of the RNY surgeries are contracted. Good luck.

How about Corona, where you live? They have one the second Tueday each month, it's at 8th & Bell behind the hospital. It's a corner bldg, looks like an old church, wide steps, wide handicapped ramp. Starts at 7 PM, many get there at 6:30. This one is put on my Dr. Suh's office, but anyone is welcome.

Good luck...I also went through the Options class. My only recommendation to you is that you contact the Options coordinator to ensure you are ready to go on April 18th ( you don't want to find out that the class is full, they don't have your necessary paperwork, etc.).
So call them to ensure they have you listed.
Best wishes..........
I completed my options class on Jan. 31, 2008. When I first started I thought six months was going to be long and drawn out. But instead it was over so quickly and I came out it with so much knowledge, but also a whole new group of friends who are in the exact same boat as I am. Only good things will come of it. My hat is off to you and good luck.
