Sugar in milk

I know its typical after WLS to be lactose intolerant and its no different for me, but even when I drink lactose free milk like the Safeway or Raleys brands I get nauseated for a bit and sometimes a stomach ache but it passes after several minutes.  The label says it has 12g of sugar per cup and regular milk has about 14g but wouldnt that be "natural" sugar? My doc told me to drink milk and said nothing about sugar content so I never thought about it being a problem.  Does anyone else have a problem even with the lactose free milks? I am 5 months out and should know this by now but as with several other things, milk has been something that turns my stomach at the thought of drinking it until just recently so its a new experience for me.

I was very lucky that I have not had a problem with milk  and I am almost 2 years out. I have several friends however that immediately were lactose intolerant ( and diabetic as well). I do however have a problem with sugar whether it's natural or added. Our surgery effects us all a bit differently and for me anyway not always consistantly. For me, I had about a 50/50 shot  of keeping certain foods down beginning about 6 months out and lasting until about now. I still don't attempt some foods because they weren't good choices to begin with but most thingsdon't bother me at all anymore. I guess really what I was trying to say is everything has sugar and alot of stuff has milk in  so just keep an eye on what level you start to get sick at. I took me a few times to realize the things that didn't work for me but after I did realize it. I was able to cope and plan much better. 1 thing I still can't do is plain water. I have to add sugar free flavoring to it or it causes me great pain. Everyone is different, be patient and good luck. Lisa

Hey Ana. I also have a huge issue with drinking milk. I get HORRIBLY gassy when I drink non-fat or 1 percent milk. I read somewhere that the more fat there is in the milk the less lactose..so I drink 2 percent milk with my coffee and haven't had a problem so far. I tried lactose free stuff but it tasted so nasty I couldn't tolerate it. I hope you find something that works out for you!!! Tiffany

I do not drink milk, milk has too many sugars and as far as I am concerned sugar is sugar. Sugar goes to the hips. Sugar goes into the blood stream. I have not done milk in forever, I do use half and half in my coffee, it has less sugars.

Thanks for the help Ladies. I guess I will just lay off the milk or only drink it in small amounts when I get that craving (better than craving soda!)  I just wonder why the doc would tell us to drink something that has so much sugar in it to begin with. I will have to ask at my 6 month appt next month and report back!
