Hey Kimmie!!!!! Glad to hear your first run felt great.  You should aim to do about 30-45 minutes in the beginning, and then increase it gradually to longer runs on the weekend.   I am bad with stretching......so I can't help you there. I am bad with my keys too.....I went on an 8 mile run on Sunday at Malibu Creek State Park.  I didn't want to carry my keys with me so I just hid them on my car tire.  Bad I know.....but I do have insurance!  LOL  I have also taken my house key and laced my shoe laces through it before....works pretty well for one key. Unless it's a really long run.....in the mornings when I run I just do it on coffee alone.  If it's a longer run I will eat a protein bar or a bagel or banana about 45 minutes before running.  Either way....when it comes to morning running, I MUST have my coffee.

Thank you for the advice, buddy.  I will start with 30 mins. and gradually increase that time.

Hi Kim, I started running... more like jogging after losing 20lbs.  I run at work durning lunch.  I walk about 1/2 mile to the track run 2 laps and then walk back to my office.  it takes me about 25 minutes to do this. Just do the best you can!

I always try to scretch my quads!  if nothing else.  That seems to be where I get the most pain.  Do what feels best for yourself and your body and you'll do fine!

I've always tied my key to my shoe like stated by a couple others.  but make sure you tie it under the laces or it might distract you.

I don't eat or drink before running...if you do, give yourself at least 1/2 hour for digestion.

Hope this helps and HAPPY RUNNING!

Hi Kim - congrat's on your new hobby - careful, the running bug can bite you good then you're stuck running... even when you don't know why anymore!  You've already got some great advise here... most of us who've trained with coach Scott with Aids Marathon Training started with a 3 mile run to get an idea of our pace group - then, like Kirsten said, we just kept adding to our saturday run milage working up to 26 miles - not that that's what you're aiming for, it just what we did. I think starting off with what's comfortable for you is good - 30-45 minutes without worrying about distance is a great start! It doesn't matter how far you go, or really even how fast you run - you're gonna get the same benefit for the amount of time you run. Even if you don't plan to run a marathon, Jeff Galloway's book, Marathon, would be great to read for advise on getting started. I have never stretched before running - I know a lot of people swear by it, and I've heard it's a good thing to do... I just never got into the habit of stretching. Since you want to be hydrating during your runs you might consider getting a water belt - typically these have one to several bottles for you to carry water on your runs. My belt also has a pouch that I put my cell phone and keys in. I have a lot of keys so have my car/house keys on a separate key ring so that I can easily leave the truck load of keys at home or in my car when I run. Some other things to think about carrying as your time and distance increases are Chapstick, salt packets (pick em up next time you're in a fast food joint!) and a couple of bucks! I'm developing this horrible habit of stopping in to a starbucks during my runs... LOL I tend to have my usual morning protein shake and coffee before I run... sometimes I skip the coffee... I don't usually eat breakfast so it's not part of my morning thing. I do eat during my longer runs - usually energy/carb stuff or gel packs. Sorry this is was so long! C h e e r s, gene

Hi Groove Daddy, Thanks for the response.  Tonight is my night for another run.  I am so excited.  I just saw on the internet on how UCLA is doing their 9th annual run/walk to support the Child Life/Child Development Program at the UCLA's Mattel Children's Hospital.  Registration is only $10 (before 3/31).  I might end up doing that.   I am so grateful of all of the wonderful advise that I have received thus far.   I have already read J. Galloway's book Running - Getting Started and that has really inspired me.  I will get the book that you mentioned also.  Couldn't hurt.

Thank you again. Kim
