Running Question

This is for all the runners on the board.  I just purchased my first pair of running shoes last week along with a watch, and a couple of books.  Fast forward to this morning... My first run.  It was good.  I feel great.  I have to learn how to set my watch for intervals, but that will come with time.  Did you know that it is cold at 5:30 (running time)?  Note to self, buy a long sleeve top or running jacket.   Question 1: How long was your first runs?  Mine was approx. 30 mins  (including warm-up and cool down). Question 2: Did you start stretching early on in your training?  (Books did not explain that clearly enough) Question 3: Where did you put your housekeys when you left for your run?   I ended up rolling mine in tissue and stuffing it in my sport bra. Question 4: Do you recomend eatting or drinking anything prior to me going  out on a run and if so how far in advance? This looks like something that I would like to get into more.  Thus far, I like it. Thank you, Kim

Kirsten got you too!!!??  LOL!!!

I think that's great that you're running...it's contagious isn't it?  Did you know it's cold at 5:30pm too?? I run at the beach after work and the breeze makes it cold sometimes.

I was thinking of making another set of house keys so that I don't have to bring ALL my keys with me. Then putting the housekeys in my iPod armband.

I don't stretch and my trainer really got on me about that.  He gave me some stretches to do and they're hard...I've become really inflexible!

I don't always eat something before going out but I make sure I get some protein afterwards...always. It helps your body recover.

I'll let the real runners answer the rest of your questions.

Will I see you at the Santa Anita 5k??

Yeah Girlfriend, Kirsten got me!! LOL I have another set of housekeys instead of the whole set (you read what I did with them) LOL I just had a cup of light cranberry juice about ten minutes before I went out of the door.

Do you run everyday, Monica.  If not, what is your schedule like?

BTW, you are looking great these days.  Keep up the good work.

I go out almost everyday. I take a break on weekends, but even then I might still go out if I get the itch.

Monday, Wednesday - I do about 30-40 minutes on the treadmill before I workout with my trainer.  That's when I get to do intervals because the clock is right there in front of me. I don't have a formula, it depends on how I'm feeling that day. I usually walk 1-minute and run 1-minute....then my trainer comes over and increases the incline so that I'm running uphill.

He thinks my workouts are getting too easy and I need to workout like a skinny chick now.

Tuesday, Thursday, Friday - I go out on the beach path near my house. I either jog/walk a 5k and time myself or just recently I started  doing the 2-mile stretch and I run up and down the sets of stairs on the bluff.  (My calves are really sore from these)

I could put my keys in my bra....lord knows I have a lot of extra room in there these days. :)

My first run was 3 miles I always did some stretches to prevent injuries

I wore a runners fanny pack and carried a water bottle and also put my keys and my snack in them

Yes I did eat.  I would eat something bout an hour before I would run and then drink during my run when I was thirsty.  IT is so important to stay hydrated and nourished.

The one to talk to is Scott B.  He is so awesome.  I miss running but it hurts my hips so bad.  But, I cycle now and I do the water and food on my rides as I don't want to crap out.

Best of luck

Liz

I used to unlace my shoe one hole. thread a housekey onto it, and then relace and tie my shoe....took an extra second but I never lost a key. =)
