Okay, so I had to go back to my doctor again today for another evaluation for the insurance, so I had to gain 5 pounds to get over that 40 bmi again.  So, I went to WalMart and bought the ankle weights with the removable weights.  Those weights are just plastic covered sand in 1.5 lb packets.  So, I stuffed two in each side, gave myself a little lift, and added 6 pounds.  Gotta love Wal Mart!  Ha!  Now, I just have to wait for the insurance approval AGAIN!!!  :)

Michelle, Please do not consider this to be a slam but I think that doing that is terrible.  I know that the insurance said your BMI was not high enough. But, I think pushing people to do something like this is terrible.  I am sorry but that is my opinion. I do hope that you get the auth that you are looking for and have a successful surgery. Liz

I have to agree with Liz on this one.  Don't you think your doctor is going to be suspicious when you suddenly drop the six pounds?  Good luck with your endeavor.

Hilarious!  I hope it works.  The rules for having to be a certain BMI one day and then requiring you to lose a certain percentage prior to surgery, but not so much that you aren't the right BMI anymore...can make a girl's head spin.  While I agree with the 2 pp's in theory that it is not right to have to do this to get the surgery, in actual practice, this is your life and health you are talking about here.  You gotta do what you gotta do.  By the way, water weighs eight+ pounds per gallon and drinking a liter (2.2 puonds) before your weighin is not unethical.  Good luck on your repeat ins. approval.  D2K

While I do understand your prediciment, I feel that they have those regulations for a purpose.  There is a reason they request you be at a BMI of 40 or more.  They are weighing risks, for someone who is over 40 BMI they feel that its healthier to have surgery, and that it outweighs the risks involved.  If you are under 40bmi, your health has a better chance of going down than up.  I do hope everything works out for you, and wish you the best.

Sick as it sounds, I prayed in the surgeon's office that my BMI was over 40 as I really did not understand all of this prior to surgery. I understand why you did it, but I am hoping that this was not the suggestion of the doctor....good luck to you!

I undesrtand why you did it and while it may not be a good thing to do its sometimes the lies we have to tell to get the surgery.  I gained 10 pounds to get mine and was willing to gain up to 8 more to get it. I was able to get them to approve it from my original weight. Please be careful. *My BMI was not the issue it was you had to have 100 lbs to loose and they were quibbling over bone structure with me. I am small framed and they were considering me large framed thats why I did what I did. Was it wrong? Sorta, but I am happy that I got my surgery.
