OT: DAD update...LONG...

Well... here is an update...it was a busy day at the hospital with dad....lots of action...his insurance has reached a point where it is less expensive for them to have Dad moved to a "rehab hospital" (aka, nursing home, convelescent home, whatever) for however many days that he will still need to be on both the IV food ("TPN") and IV antibiotics that he needs. He really doesn't need the acute care of the hospital, and it costs much more than the same level of care would cost at another non-hospital facility.  This would mean moving dad by ambulance to the rehab hospital, and then later moving him home when he is able.   Dad's case manager helped so much today!! She told us about filing an appeal on the discharge to the rehab hospital and then mom filed an appeal w/the medi-cal (or whatever...Luminar?? Lumax??) state board people to keep him in the hospital, rather than sending him to a "rehab hosp" and then home... we think two moves could be counter productive for him... he doesn't want a rehab hosp... so, our case manager, (bless HER HEART!!) told us that filing an appeal would buy him about two more days in the hospital, so that's what we did...we shall see what comes of this.   also, mom and I visited one of the facilities.. Park Regency in La Habra.. but the woman there told us that the TPN would not be paid for under dad's plan at that facility...back to hospital, case manager told us that it would simply go into negotiations and his insurance would end up agreeing to pay for it at that site, so, ultimately, he may end up going there for a few days of care...   It's all a bunch of hoops to jump through, isn't it?   What I think Dad really wants to do is go home and have home health care... mom is concerned that she is not up to what may be required of her in that scenario, but, with the proper support from Home Health Care people, I think it may be a do-able option, but, who knows? And, he may not even need it..he is getting better much more rapidly now.   Either way, he has two more days in hospital to heal and be comfortable, and that's good.... He sat up today for hours at a time, and took his first walk around the floor... he's pooping on his own...and the colostomy is filling up less and less and is lighter and lighter in color...both signs of his stomach healing....many good things today.   oh, yah, his blood sugar DID elevate and he did have to have some insulin... it has come down today (104).... the body..so complicated...such a web of counterbalances...treat one thing, and another thing goes out of whack and needs meds...   So... the upshot is... God is good! He is leading and guiding and healing... giving mom strength and wisdom to figure what is the next step, and to just stay focused on one step at a time... healing dad... bringing the right people into the picture to help out...   Thank you for your prayers and continue to pray... all of this has been an interruption in dad's cancer treatments, which will need to resume ASAP...   with love and thanksgiving, and hope...
