I have been mulling this over in my head for hours now MaryLouise...and although I feel bad for the kids (the one shot) I can't help thinking being a middle school teacher and seeing this kids think it is cool to buck authority like they do The get it from somewhere...like the TV shows and other forms of media.
I asked my students recently after the stole from me and defaced my property that where is the falling off point because the do not come out of the womb and their parents say, I am going to raise my child to be liar, thief, and be disrespectful. I said no parent intentionally ever does that no matter the socio economic background...everything we can think.
Those boys parents gave up on them instead of listening to their cries for help by acting out that lead up to this day for you and your family.
I just feel horrible you and more so your son's had to lay witness to such a violent act. And yes there is a God who protected all of you through this I truly believe.
Sometime I feel immune to it because where I taught when I lived in the SF bay area( ghetto Oakland and by choice) there were children shot all the time for various reasons. The one that tore me up the most is when a 7 year old Mein boy was gunned down right in front of our school from a driveby.
We live in a society where people feel violence is the answer including the people who are supposed to protect us. It is idealistic to think that sometimes things can be talked out, but for immediately to resort to violence is beyond my comprehension.
It is sad sad sad....and like I said....I am so sorry that you and your son's witnessed this and glad that you are safe too!
I could go on and really get on my soapbox....I am a very peaceful person and I do not believe that there is any room for violence on any level....call me a hippie or whatever....but I am who I am and I believe everyone deserves a chance and not a bullet!
Big hugs to you and your family and I hope that you can make some sense of this to your boys..may it be a powerful lesson to them also that violence at any level is not the way!
“When you find peace within yourself, you become the kind of person who can live at peace with others.” –Peace Pilgrim (1908-1981).
Janine.. I have to agree with you.. I feel the same way.. violence does not solve violence. Unfortunatly it is sad to see that so many parents have given up on their children, even at such young ages. I mean I look at the rate of teen pregnancies, teen violence, shootings in schools and even absent parents and I think my God, take me now.. I dont want to be a part of this horrible world we live in anymore. Parenting has become such an incovienence to so many and it just sickens me. Call me bias or old fashion.. but Sex is something of merely pleasure, not anything thought out, or shared between a man and wife whom love one another and desire to have children. Instead it is an act that most dont stop to realize comes with life changing consequences.. pregnancy. Society has lost the real value of life, and everything is about self satisfaction, self gratification (sorry I am not the best speller without spell check..lol). These poor teens we see on the streets anymore have no hope for a brighter futur when they have no one in thier home showing them the love needed to instill that hope, or instill the values we should all posses in life. Unfortunatly I didnt not see a write up in the paper today on yesterdays events, so I have no idea the cir****tances evolved around the teens. I have heard from a friend (who is a police officer) that more than likely it was not real bullets that they used, maybe bean bags (I think that is what he called them) to knock them down, even maybe pellets. But like I said no write up so I have no idea at this point. Then at the same time, like I told my son, this is what happens when someone tries to think they are above the law. And as shamed by others as I know I will be for stating this.. BAD parenting is a huge issue too I am sure!!
Anyways now that I have rambled..lol and shared probably way more than I should in a post I will stop.. Thank you for sharing your oppinion.. I appreciate it!! (((HUGS)))
