Does anyone have any advice on carb counting and balancing everything?  Also, how many gms are you allowed?  My program booklet says 1200 calories, 133 gms carbs, 30 grams fat and 70 to 80 grams Protein.  I find if I get one thing right than something else is off.  Over or under.  Thanks for your time.

Are you keeping a strict log of everything you eat?  I was put on an 800 calorie/day diet.  I couldn't eat >40 gm carb and no more than >30 gm fat per day.  One of my therapists does a lot of weight control programs and he said the protein to carb ration ought to be close to a 1-to-1 ratio, with far less fat... but this is just his opinion.  I myself, on another doctor's orders, went to a 1500-2000 cal per day diet and I am losing weight without really trying.

Hi,  What I was told and have done is a 2 to 1 ratio of Protein to carbs. So if you eat 80 grams of protein, you would eat 40 or less grams of carbs a day. This is after surgery though. Good Luck! Lauren

Thank you both so much for responding.  I do keep a food log.  Actually I am also on Weigh****chers also.  I keep a WW log and try to balance everything.  I am way under the points they say I should eat.  I guess I had better try to get in touch with the dietician and see if I can get some clarity on what they want to do.  I am going through Kaiser.  I am having trouble getting the carbs down to 133.  I don't know how I will get it lower. I know they say to depend more on protein but the more protein I get the more fat I get.  I am totally overwhelmed.  Thanks again for your help.

I keep trying to figure out how you can at 133 carbs on a 1200 a day diet? I think they made some sort of mistake! I am eating about 40 carbs a day myself and have been super strict with it. I am going on 6 years out and I am telling you....it has made me lose a buttload of weight recently....like nearly 30 pounds. I am excited about it and I get my carbs from veggies, a wee bit of fruit, a soy snack, a low carb protien bar, and fit and light yogurt. I am going to have to add up my caloric intake, but I am not concerned about it...it is the carbs that will pack it on! Good luck to you!!!! Bounce

Good to know from a pro like you!!   I have gotten so bad about eating lately and need to get myself back on track. I know I don't eat enough food or protein. I don't know why I got off track, but have to get back. I need to start tracking on Daily Plate again and really see what I am consuming! I've thought about doing the 5DPT, have you ever done it?  It is good to read posts like this to see what everyone else is doing.   The image  Becky

Thanks for your response.  Is there anywhere I can find a typical menu for the day?  Maybe that will help me.  I have cut back on the carbs and notice I have started losing.  I was kind of stuck.

I don't have any good advice on this, as I am not eating very good myself these days, not enough that is.  I just wanted to say that it will be much different postop. I saw you say you don't know how you will get your carb count lower, but you will when you get your tool, trust me! I still don't get hungry at all, it is really a trip. But let me warn you that the head hunger can be a B!OTCH!!! Best of luck with your journey! What week of classes are you in? I had Kaiser too. I'm so glad you found OH, it really helps and has changed my life!!!   May God bless your journey!   hugs, Becky

Thanks Becky.  I am not in classes at Kaiser.  So far I have had the consultation with the surgeon, dietician and coordinator.  They have told my primary care doctor what tests they want done.  I was told to find a support group and start trying to adjust to the new way of eating.  What classes are you referring to?  I go to weight  watchers and that might be enough as far as classes go.  Which Kaiser do you have to go to?  I have to go into Fremont.  I sure hope I am doing the right thing in going the direction of bypass.
