Topic: Had VSG on August 12th Feeling Better Everyday!!!

Hi everyone, Thanks for all the great messages and support. As each day passes I am feeling better and stronger. I am drinking my protein shakes, soup, yogurt, applesauce, jello, popsicles. I have not had any vomiting. I do experience indigestion but not all the time. I have to say that the extra air that you experience right after surgery was the most difficult for me. But getting up and moving around was very helpful. I have finished with my blood thinner injections that I was taking post op, still taking medication to lower acid production. I am getting out walking everyday. I went to see my GP last Thursday for a check up and I have lost 15lbs. since my weigh in at the hospital pre surgery. I have to try to get in more water as I know I am not getting enough. One funny thing that I am experiencing is that when I eat anything my tummy does a lot of talking to my....gurgles and growls!!! Has anyone else experienced that?  LOL!!!

I know exactly how you feel. My BMI is right at 40, as well. I don't want to start losing yet because of fear that I won't qualify anymore. I was looking on the lightweights forum and some of them weigh more than me and I will never consider myself a lightweight! I've suffered prejudice most of my life for being obese and that's my reality and it's hurtful to think that others may try to say that my pain and struggle have not been as substantial as theirs.

yes. having someone to share it with sure does help make the journey easier.  i just so desperately want to make this work. iam tired of feeling like my weight is controlling everything i do. One thing that is kind of driving me crazy right now is... Well my BMI is not extremely high like some others i have met. So people keep saying to me stuff like. Well why do you need surgery. You arent really big. THis makes me crazy. Even people a the program at the hospital. Alot assume i have already had the surgery. Grr.  Just because my BMI is only 40 it doesnt mean iam in control.

Yes, we should stay in touch and support each other! This is such a big thing to experience alone, it will be great to be able to share the challenges and victories with someone else who is going through the same thing.

Thanks for the update Laura! I've been thinking about you and hoping that things went well with your surgery. Are you settling in at home now? Best of luck!!!

Sounds like things are going pretty well. If you are looking for good protein shakes, the Premier Protein shakes you can get at Costco are awesome. Small enough for you to sip on as a meal replacement, but have 30g of protein. Second if you are looking for something a little thicker would be Glucerna Meal Replacement shakes, which can be bought at Walmart or some Shoppers Drug Marts. They are 225 cal (vs 160 for the Premier Protein), and have only 22g of protein, but they are a little thicker and that is what I lived off of pre-surgery.

Gas pain and nausea were my constant companions for about 5 days, but didn't use much of my pain medication at all.

You got this! Welcome to the losers bench! Good luck!

Had my surgery on August 12th and I am feeling pretty good. I know I am not getting in all the protein that I should be but my tummy is telling me to go slow. Sooo I am listening. I have not needed any pain meds since the 15th, although I am tired. I find that I go for a 15 minute walk or outing and I need to rest when I get home. I would say the worse part was the gas pain in my tummy from the air that is put into your abdomen for the surgery. Getting that going and moving was painful for me but by day 3 it was pretty much gone. I felt it in my tummy, chest, back and shoulder blades. Can be a little scary because it presents like signs of other things that are dangerous. I have been eating whey protein shakes, boost, applesauce, chicken or beef broth, yogurt, sugar free popsicles, and sipping water all day.

Iam sorry to hear that you have been waiting so long. Iam sure that is discouraging. I have heard that Dr. Amson's waits can be long.

I understand about being overweight our whole life. I have been too. Sometimes just a little and sometimes a whole lot. Iam glad to hear that you have been using this time to get ready for what lies ahead. That really will make you more successful.

We should keep in touch and encourage each other.
