Initial Consult
Hi,
I am new here, and I have my very first appt with Dr. Tang on Nov 16th. I have done lots of research into RnY, but I would love any advice/suggestions as to what to be sure to ask while I am in the consult.
I am excited and nervous and know this is the start to a very long journey because of the waitlists here in BC.
Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
Have you read the book Weight Loss Sugery for Dummies if not I would get that, I used that book a lot pre and post surgery.
Write down your questions you want to know and take them with you to your appointment as your appt will pass by quickly.
Some surgeons want you to keep an eating and exercise journal.
Also join a support group in your area, go on www.blazeonline.com/wls under resources and check out the support groups.
Also another website is www.wlsforum.net

Hi Sandra, I have yet to have my first consult also (Dec 20th with Dr Ngyuen), but I have done lots of research as well. I'm curious how long it took to get your first appt? I have bought WLS for Dummies and a couple of other great books that have a lot of suggestions. I'd love to keep in touch to see how your appt goes etc. Good Luck!

It did not take long at all to get my appt. It took less than a month. I am going to see Dr. Tang in Victoria.
Where can you find the book Weightloss for Dummies??? Can I find it at one of my local Coles book stores or will I have to order it online???
I spent the last two years talking with others who have had the surgery as well as done tons of research online about the surgery. I just wanted to know if there were questions that others had that would not be considered within the norm.
As the day draws closer, I am getting more nervous/anxious and this is just the consult. I am so afraid to hear what he is going to tell me, tha t I already know...and I am afraid he is going to tell me things I don't know about my obesity and such.
I am glad to have found the forums, and thanks for the direct to the support groups, I am definately going to look into those as well.

Phew, busy few days.
Consult went great, Dr Tang was very thourough and explained all my options, and what I could expect when the time comes. When the time came to say I really wanted the surgery all of a sudden I got scared. I knew this was a big step...but man!!!!! That was not what I was expecting.
He told me it would take upwards of 4 years because of the wait lists...he was very upfront about it all. As sad as it sounds, I do hope that I have enough co-morbidities that allows me to be bumped up the list.
I am not also considering looking at trying to get MSP to cover OOC. I sadly am on disability and cannot afford self pay...so I am currently at the mercy of MSP. Here is hoping. I just need to do a bit more research for OOC...and getting it covered, and finding out the hoops that I will have to jump through to get that done.

I'm glad the doctor was very upfront with you about the wait times. I think that's the worse thing, being told you'll get your surgery and then you wait, and wait, and wait...........
Mine was 3 years of seeing both Dr Amson and Dr Malik and every co morbilities you hear of.
I also live in Surrey if you'd like to meet up and chat. I had my surgery in May and am down 65lbs and now a size 10

BBWVixen, meeting up to chat sounds great. It would be great to have someone who has gone through it for the moral support. Also always meeting and getting along with someone new is great for the friendship component of life LOL.
