Please anyone who has gone through this.  How do you appeal?  What other things can I do to increase my chances for approval? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How dissapointing!  So sorry you have to deal with that.  What is your BMI?  I've heard it needs to be above 50.  Did you write a letter explaining why you need this surgery so much?  Explaining co-morbidities, life impact, and outcome if you have to wait longer?

I applied for OOC, and my surgeon told me I wouldn't be approved because my BMI wasn't over 50. Although I know others who were under 50, and were.....I guess it's about risk, and any way you can convince MSP that this is a live saving surgery for you, the better.

Don't give up.  When I found out I didn't qualify for OOC, I got a date within 3 months, and I'm 12 days post op.

Keep trying!

I'm sorry to hear you were denied OOC. Also you have to have at least co-morbidities, sleep apnea, diabetes, high blood pressure etc. If you have these did you include these in your letter if not I would get documented proof from any of the specialists you have seen, and send it in again with everything. Make sure your letter details how this impacts your daily life, from as simple to not being able to tie your own shoes, to walking up a flight of stairs, to fitting into a seat, even if you cant reach places while showering, anything you can think of that your weight affects your daily life will help you with this getting approved. If you have specialists letters that will help as well.

Some people are denied a few times before they get approved, I would keep pushing to get this OOC approved tell them your life depends on this surgery.

How do you mean you got a date within 3 months? With OOC or with a surgeon here? Or did you self pay? Sorry, I don' t know your history , but I am interested! :)

I'm so sorry to hear that.  I was denied 3 times before I was finally approved, so I know how you are feeling right now.  They should have sent you a letter explaining why...if you want to private message me on here, I'd be so happy to try and help you get your appeal together...don't give up!  I almost did but I'm so glad now that I kept pushing.

Thanks all for the support.  I will try to appeal just not too sure how to go about it.  When I talked to MSP yesterday, she told be basically because my form said requires surgery within 1 year, and this is not urgent enough to warrant OCC.  I also was told that it really boils down to what the surgeon who is filling out your form says on the application.  Now it sounds like I need Dr Amson to resubmit something supporting the fact that I need this surgery immediately rather than within 1 year. I really hate to do this.  I felt bad asking him the first time, now I've got to ask him again??  I really want to give it another shot.  I can't wait 4 or 5 or whatever years!!!!! Soooo glad we have a place to chat and talk about this when it gets tough. Most people don't understand what it's like for us waiting for WLS.
Cheers

You shouldnt feel bad asking him again, because this is your life, you've got to advocate for yourself nowadays especially with our health care system.

If you look on the www.blazeonline.com/wls they are on posts right now talking about the patients from 2005 or 2006 being looked at for weight loss surgery now. Your letter should state this fact as well.

Do you have any specialists that you see for co-morbidities that would be willing to write you a letter for MSP as well.
