Leaving BC for VSG in Mexico - April
Booked and Ready to go
I chose Mexico for a few reasons, one I did not want to go through all the red tape in Canada, two was that it was not covered by BC Medical and three I could afford it. due to money. I will do anything to get off a CPAP after 16 years.
A few details of this post are from another OP. it was very well written and I could not improve on it one bit.
My initial introduction was going to a lecture in Texas and learning alot about all the procedures available. After the initial consult I really thought the lap band was for me. Then after more research I decided for the VSG due to the fact that I travel alot. My feeling was that I would have problems getting fills etc due to not being near a fill center.
During my Internet research I leaned more towards VSG and then found WLS in Mexico and Texas very interesting. . All with highly recommended surgeons. Prices ranged from $5200 to $7000 in Mexico to $14000 to $18000 in South Texas. Prices were better in Mexico so now it was time to narrow down the surgeon.
Then I found this website and frankly, PMed members who had had surgery in Mexico. I narrowed the docs down to Dr.s Aceves and Almanza. All of their patients I contacted raved about each one of them. So with that being equal, I chose Dr. Almanza due to his lower price.
My contact, Melissa Bracker has been great to deal with and has me scheduled for April 8. I am getting the VSG surgery for $5200 and made a deposit of $500 to reserve my booking. I fly into San Diego a few days in advance. This is her website http://www.obesesolutions.com/pkg-tijuana.php
My dentist is in Mexico so I am abit accustomed to doctors in Mexico already.
I will see my family doctor 10 days after surgery to get the stitches removed and to get a general check over.
Most of the docs post their certificates and degrees on their website. You can also Google the docs. I think the best testament to their qualifications is to PM their past patients.
Good luck and congrats on your decision to change your life. This has been the best thing I have ever done for myself and wish I had done it 20 years or more earlier.
Take any criticism you may hear about a specific doc with a grain of salt unless that poster has first hand knowledge and can substantiate their claims.

PS - thanks Nancy, thought I would revamp this and put it on a Canadian site

Terry,
Just wanted to add my good luck wishes. I had the surgery done 3 1/2 years ago in Mexico and it was the best thing I have ever done. Remember nothing tastes as good as thin feels. Soon you be on the loser bench and will be able to move around freely. I remember before I lost the weight I would get all hot and sweaty if I dropped my car keys because I knew it would be difficult for me to bend over and pick them up. Getting into a sports car or a small plane were both nightmares. But that has all changed. Last weekend I was at the new car dealership looking for a sports car!!!
