> Hi Kelly,
>
> Unfortunately, I cannot write a letter on behalf of our program. Our mandate as the Provincial Specialized Eating Disorders Program is to assess and treat people who struggle with severe anorexia nervosa and/or bulimia nervosa. Our program does not offer treatment for binge eating disorder, compulsive overeating, or for obesity as we do not have the resources for this. For our of country treatment for any of these, your doctor would be required to write on your behalf. MSP may have directed you to follow this procedure of contacting our program if you have indicated you want treatment for an eating disorder. You and your doctor will be required to be very specific of the nature of your eating disorder and the type of treatment you are seeking. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavor. It sounds as though you have made many steps to improve your life and that you are motivated to make change for yourself.

So what does that tell you! They have funding for most other Eating Disorders that are life threatening but not one overeating or obesity! Which we all know is just as deadly!
Real sad isnt it when it all is an eating disorder. I applied for OOC this year and was turned down, but that was before I had had all my pre-op tests done. So I hope you have your preop tests all done before sending in your OOC forms and that you have a bariatric surgeon sign your form.
Hope you get the OOC form approved, you can appeal it if you don't get approved the first time, I say keep trying cause getting the surgery is so important.
Take care
Suzanne
I have never seen the information above on any out of country forms I had completed back in February of 2008. I was approved for OOC coverage and had my surgery at Virginia Mason in June. Kelly, we have talked on the phone. I can tell you are getting very frustrated, I don't blame you.
I know you had an appointment or are scheduled for an appointment with Dr. M. in Vancouver. Have you discussed the above with him? Was he able to offer you any direction.
I don't mean this in a negative way at all, but from reading your post it sometimes sounds like you are looking for faults in the system. We all know there are many. Finding them and identifying them is not going to get you surgery any sooner. Find ways to work around the negative aspects of our broken medical system. Please don't misinterpret this to mean I think you are doing something wrong. I don't think that at all. I just think that we all have limited resources of energy, channel that energy into finding solutions rather than finding more problems. If you want to talk about this let me know. I will be happy to do so.
Send me an email and let me know what steps you have taken and where you are at with your search for coverage. Maybe I can offer some other suggestions.
It is sad that Obesity is not viewed as an eating disorder. We all know that it is, even the medical profession as a whole views it as such, remember that although MSP is part of the medical system they are not the medical profession. They are a government funded, administrated and run organization that really has no fricking clue what they are doing to people.
Hang in there. keep up the hard work and stay focused on the prize. The journey is long and hard, but worth it. I worked for 6 years before finally getting my surgery. 5 months later I would say that it has been totally worth the wait.

Hey Barb,
I understand what you are saying when you say try and find ways around our medical system..
I only posted this information so people that may have gone to the requirements for OOC website that is posted on the web could understand that there are ways around it, and not to give up hope.
As for as myself I'm doing good so far and it has been along road (I started my back in 2000) but things are looking up for me now.
And I'm feeling really positive about that.
I just found it very upsetting and heart breaking that like you say" Obesity isn't viewed as a eating disorder", "in their eyes"
That was they only reason I felt I wanted to post it..
I am so happy that you are doing great and feeling wonderful!
Keep up the awesome work!
Wishing you all the best always..
Kelly
